This reminds me of my path: wanted to study EE because I thought that designing chips, working in a fab etc. would be cool, started studying EE and realised I would need to get a PhD to do the more interesting work (frankly I'm not sma

Using percentages rather than basis points can be ambiguous. E.g. "1% increase from a 1% rate". Does this mean 1.01% (relative increase) or 2% (absolute increase)?

I found the "pots and pans" thing back in 2020 to be eery. It was once said "Prussia was not a country with an army, but an army with a country"; the UK is not a country with a health service, but a health service with a

Sadly over the last ~10 years, a lot of good tech journalists have left the space: Anand went to Apple; David Kanter no longer posts to RWT (though the forums remain a goldmine); Andrei Frumusanu and Ian Cutress left Anandtech - they are bo

I prefer the convenience of always having a reasonably large screen to hand. Physical footprint doesn't matter for me; my Osprey backpack can easily take a 16" laptop. It's the weight that's the factor for me.

If Apple announced a 16" MBA, I'd buy one and ditch my ThinkPad. 13" is just a bit too limiting for my tastes, and I don't need the power or the extra expense of the 16" MBP.

There were plans under British Rail [0] and Railtrack [1] to push running above 125 mph via realignments & resignalling. Virgin Trains proposed running at 135 mph via the Tilt Authorisation and Speed Supervision system [2]. [0] https:&

Do you have a ZBook? Those have always had the middle mouse button (probably for people who use CAD etc). EliteBook trackpoints never had a middle button.

A different twist on the Itanium: technically bad but ended up as a strategic win for Intel. SGI, Compaq and HP mothballed development of their own CPUs (MIPS/Alpha/PA-RISC) as they all settled on Itanium for future products. Afte

I'd also add that a lot of excellent ex-Alpha engineers (e.g. Jim Keller, Dan Dobberpuhl off the top of my head) ended up designing great chips at other companies.
