The number of times I reinvented something due to lack of knowledge, assistance, training, or from being thrown into a tech stack I am unfamiliar with, etc. was quite maddening. I'm pretty sure that's how most CS courses are desig

Possibly. The author at least knew enough to observe "Both join fields are indexed. However, MariaDB implements the join with a full scan of project_commits and an index lookup on commits."

Worth noting: the lack of tip culture in the EU as per the previous poster's example. A waiter being tipped 1$ coins each night would add up quickly.

It was explained to me when starting my current remote position that they didn't care how I got things done as long as they got done, and that I was expected to reasonably be available during normal local working hours and respond to c

I mean the article is referring to traditional tv, which doesn't need to be signed up for, just need an antenna. But, I imagine you also have no interest in the type of programming that comes with that.

This is very neat technologically. I can't imagine it is easy to do predictive text and have it be meaningful. I suspect that that will be the case here. It will be useful for a narrow subset, mostly rote business things. Otherwise, it

You are not alone. I got my first 'real' job programming in my late 30s. Doing okay, but not like I thought I would be after 4 years.

Yes. As a former cook, it's only the high end jobs that do this, not the chain restaurants. I think that is some of the problem with our industry, imagine if Applebee's started doing this because The French Laundry does? But, I th

Sure. But, of course there is a difference between having a conversation about the overall trends of a practice versus a small subset of personal experiences. It's also important to define what you mean by "can't do FizzBuzz&

I agree that there are upper limits on a given individual's potential, but I think you are being too absolutist in language. I'm not sure that you can take ANY person and teach them any given thing. That's just silly. I think

>"Governments that do this in Europe fail horribly and just increase prices by huge multiples, nothing else." That's a very strong statement to make based on one example. That would like saying that the US has no quality c

> "Doing Accessibility work feels like doing CSS work back in the late 90s." Agreed. One of my first positions was doing accessibility on a government agency's app because no one else wanted to. It was a horrible, bloated

They do their math in the article. "In the United States, the average diaper sells for about 25 cents. The quarters add up quickly. Newborns need as many as 12 changes a day. That’s $21 per week, or $84 per month. Bigger kids need fewe

Good point. Depends on the generation you are referring to. Gen X? Child rates have been slowly decreasing since the 70s. I imagine most expect that trend to continue, but I"m not sure that it would be enough to preclude a substantial

There is a prominent link in the article where he addressees people's criticisms, including most of what is said here. He also puts "hacking' in quotes which generally denotes that the term is not to be taken literally.

It is cynical, but it's also very common now to believe that, and that is very dangerous to democracy. The level of distrust of anything and everything seems to be at an all time high. The idea that one large corporation is using their
