I tried the same test on a different system with spinning drives, it took 1 minute 43 seconds. The resulting file is 12kb (all inserts, no deletes or updates). It’s sync writes that are slow.

Sqlite is in loads of things, Firefox, VSCode etc., if you have NFS home directories you can have issues. KDE’s akonadi uses MySQL via localhost, though it can’t handle you being logged in more than one place. My view is that a JSON or XML

It’s very slow at writing over NFS. I wrote a simple python script writing 1000 entries, committing after each one, in WAL mode. In Fedora 22 VMs, NFS4.2 default settings, no security, SSD on host machine. - local speed = 2 seconds -

Photo mechanic is great, you can import from a card and put the files on any mounted drive. You can set the import from a card to rename the files by date or other Exif info and into directories in the same way. It can browse directories wi

I didn’t spot that one, though it was almost 10 years ago and I don’t see more recent examples. My point was that a large number of users don’t actually have hyper-threading on the desktop.

Intel i5 desktop chips don’t have hyper-threading (SMT) and haven’t for the 10 years they’ve been available. Typically the i7 variant of the same CPU has been about £100 more (roughly 50%). The point about only 5% extra die space makes no d

I tend to assume anyone who reports a bug is likely about the 10th person to experience the issue if it’s a big issue. Probably 100th or more if it’s a more minor bug. You can sometimes see this for yourself if you have logs that report 404

Apple stuff lasts, this is not an Apple issue, any of those phones would have been good for several years. I'm only my 3rd iPhone in 9 years (soon to replace it though). Also 3rd iPad in 9 years. My Macbook Air is from 2012. Apple do s

The main reason is probably that 1080p30 is 1580 MBits and USB2 is only 480 MBits, so it has to do decompression.

That’s a ridiculous solution. Many of those products can’t go online by themselves, that $13,000 lens can’t and most the cameras talk to a phone only, not the internet, and that’s even if people use that feature. I don’t why Sony, Canon or

I’m not sure the bad publicity is worth it. People will who read the press about it, will doubt the real deals are real and not order them (e.g. 50% off, which is big saving, but still happens). Amazon is big company with a lot of good engi

It's still very fast. Less than 2 minutes to read the entire drive of the base model. It's more than twice as fast as any SATA SSD. Similar to 2017 Macbook Air for read speed and much better write [1] I'm sure for almost all

Memcache was released in 2003, we didn't start to see server SSDs until 2008. For many places, if you put the database on SSDs, it's fast enough.

I've mostly had older cars 5-10 years old and I rarely had issues with anything in the engine. It was typically suspension, brakes, lights, the starter battery etc. Tesla make it's difficult to fix their cars by restricting parts

That’s not the same thing. Advertising a product involves using someone’s likeness to endorse a product, which is strictly controlled in many countries. It’s not the same as having adverts in the feed next to your content. I’m sure facebook

I can’t see how this would be legal. As a amateur photographer myself, I know that to do a commercial photo like this, to advertise a product, I’d need model releases and a potentially a property release. Neither of these are needed for edi

Your second point is just re-enforcing what he said. If MacBooks move ARM, they will have solved developer piece. Since so many developers use Apple stuff, ARM will be native and servers would follow. In the 90s you could see a shift from p

I totally agree with this and on top, for me personally, I don’t care about the obsession with better cameras in these phones (now multiple modules adding to the cost). I always carry at least a compact camera (RX100m3), and often a full fr

My dad died a few years ago, he was a keen flickr user and member of many groups, so we kept his account alive. Fortunately, it looks like he just over the 1000 limit, so we just have to prune 100 or so photos.

Why wouldn't they just put a TLS1.2 reverse proxy infront of whatever legacy system is there? or use cloudflare? that'd be way easier than telling people to reconfigure their browsers to be insecure everywhere on the web.
