Every book MWL has released has been super helpful in my experience. Probably one of the best tech writers I’ve ever encountered. I own most of this books - especially the more BSD specific ones.

I can see it cut both ways. I won’t argue that my way is the only correct way because I’m certain it’s not. Something I didn’t make clear in the very brief description I gave was that, yes, capturing context of what was there is important.

Honestly, I’d have approached it differently. Close everything older than 2 weeks. If it’s important/relevant, it will crop back up. If it’s not, then it stays unfixed. This can be really uncomfortable to do. But it’s how I’ve rescued

I don’t do much on the apps/websites side of things. I’m a platform and systems developer by experience/preference. That said, I’ve long maintained a blog. I prefer to build my own tools. I wrote a highly opinionated static site g

Honest question - what would I use UPnP for? I discovered a similar issue as the blog poster with my QNAP NAS which was easily remedied by disabling UPnP. I’ve not noticed any issues. We can do all the same things we did before. My Xbox and

By at least some measures, it’s the most popularly deployed language as well. This is probably at least 50% due to counting WordPress. That said, I did pick up PHP and Laravel out of curiosity. It truly is nothing like the PHP I learned in

I worked in University IT. In fact, for one of the schools listed though it’s been 10+ years. Basically everything the above poster said. It was pulling teeth to update or upgrade anything.

Honestly, pfSense has been a bit suspect for a while due to less than forthright development. OpnSense is the truly open source alternative and is a solid option. It was started in protest of pfSense’s less open behavior.

For giggles, would've liked to have seen Erlang/Elixir in the mix.

I have mixed feelings on this. I go back and forth on whether I agree or disagree. For example, once an application becomes sufficiently complex, I've found ORM's to be more of a hindrance. The abstraction gets leaky and I end up

Honestly, frameworks like Rails or Django are an anti-pattern for Golang. The standard library makes it very easy to build web services and there’s a couple or popular packages for making routes and dealing with HTTP requests/responses

Not the parent OP, but for myself... I keep it simple. Choose a couple things to focus on and write those down in my planner (pen and paper). Lately it’s been: - read more books, especially biographies and histories - spend time with my kid

I used to chase bleeding edge Linux distros but these days, I nearly always reach for either an LTS release or a BSD for my personal projects. Sadly, I got all my network appliances setup and configured with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS a month or so b

I actually worked in an org that took the Tick/Tock model and applied it to rewrites. As a big monolith got too unwieldy, we’d refactor major pieces out into another service. Over time, we’d keep adding a piece of functionality into th

I’ve been doing the same in fact. I’ve always had a soft spot for Erlang (and now Elixir). I wrote a pretty large Erlang app back in college for a distributed system in a Biology research project. I’ve been enjoying working with it - taking

Why uhhh... why wouldn’t people just start writing new components in C#. Surely learning C# is not beyond them? It’s not like there’s a compatibility issue. Just stop writing it.

That depends. If it’s “bring your own key” then there’s nothing they can do. That said - I’m not familiar enough with how they’d build that infra at scale to make it cost effective.

Mojave and Catalina added more restrictions around non-App Store programs where you need to sign and notarize. I know I’ll probably catch downvotes for it but I think this is a good thing for the average user as someone in security. I know

I'll be uh... honest, I didn't realise anyone still used Dart. Not meant to be a dig - just forgot it existed. As to the topic - a single question mark seems to make more sense.

It's not so much a problem with the watch as it's not really in line with the way I want to interact with my watch. As I've gotten busier, I prefer a pull model, not a push. I block off parts of my day and don't want to
