Do you have any pointers for us hackers? One thing I've used in the past is posting bit.ly links, which can give me some data. But it seems like I'd have to participate in many many different forums & blogs for these links to my product

My biggest "struggle" is basically what you identified: that I (as a developer) don't like to do it. But I force myself to, since in the long run, I know it will be worthwhile. So I occasionally write blog posts [1], very occasionally tweet

As a developer, I definitely feel much more productive if I'm coding rather than cooking up some scheme to market my apps better. But it is definitely a struggle. I know marketing is super important, because if I don't do it, I won't get en

I also love BTT. I have some keyboard and/or trackpad macros that allow me to organize my windows very quickly, to my desired quadrant or half of my screen.

Very nice site! I like your pricing page. As someone who planned his own wedding, I feel like your startup is tackling a great problem for people. The wedding industry is all about sucking people dry of their $$$, and if you can do a bunch

You are already a sole proprietor. That's the default designation in US tax law [1]. I'd at least start a one-person LLC. There are liability benefits, and probably some tax benefits (I'm not an accountant). In my case, I started an S-corp.

The first big jump I got was in March 2012, when I added iPad support (universal binary) and also translated the app store description to Chinese (钢琴). It turns out that people will search for their native word for piano! ;-) Then it grew s

Good question. I guess I meant that I'd be able to pay off enough of the mortgage such that my monthly payment would be close to my current rent. :) If it turns out that I do better than expected, then I'll pay for it in cash. If not, then

I built a company that develops iOS apps. My most successful app so far is http://www.tinypiano.com/ with 6 million (free) downloads (launched Feb 2012). The app is monetizing via ads and in-app purchases. I do this full time. My goal was

A trend graph would definitely be interesting. Though, during the 6 years in which he/she could have been getting a PhD, the Stanford undergrad earns $480K pre-tax. And ideally you get a raise or two along the way to close the gap.

Thanks for sharing, PierreA. I started on iOS at around the same time as you, and became profitable this year (not quite as successful as you, but still doing well). It sure looks like it does take that long (2+ yrs) for an indie developer

+1 to this. These days I do Objective C, but I still love AS3 & the Flash API. I just wish browsers would implement it natively (a JS version of the API), as opposed to the HTML canvas and (currently) flaky support for audio.
