Any recommendations on learning more about what constitutes idiomatic zig? This is an issue I have with learning any new language - it’s kind of hard for me to figure out what writing idiomatic code in that language looks like. I usually go

Also, I want to add a more positive anecdote to accompany some of the more negative ideas of principal engineers. I’m a senior software engineer (L5 in FAANG terms) and I’ve worked with a handful of principal engineers who have all been inc

The pay for principal SWE can get up to $1m+ (at large sv tech companies, or even at startups assuming their equity pans out). That $800k number is more accurate for staff/senior staff.

Thanks for that term. I found the Commons Clause[0] that goes along with any existing permissive license. [0]: https://commonsclause.com/

Doesn’t answer your question but something I’ve wondered about as well. I don’t maintain any open source software (yet?) but if I were to start a project I’d likely use a permissive license. I don’t want to start a philosophical flame war a

Heh, this has been top of mind for me. Since graduating I haven’t paid any attention to my GPA and it’s been almost a decade but now I’m applying to grad school and it sticks out like a sore thumb. Also, despite my professors telling me abo

I apologize, I didn’t mean to make a value statement about whether or not what’s considered a “top tier school” means as much as some folks think it does. That said, schools with big names have bigger endowments and more connections etc so

The article specifically calls out top tier schools, which pay more. You can also increase your stipend by TAing in the summer. Source: currently applying to grad school Better source: https://www.cmu.edu/stugov/gsa

Big fan of Caddy as well. I recently listened to the Sourcegraph Podcast episode with Matt Holt. Pretty great episode, would recommend! https://about.sourcegraph.com/podcast/matt-holt/

Thanks for the reply! I’ve very consciously changed my diet to one where I pay attention to nutritional content, but yeah I’m sure nutrition has an impact. I mentioned in another response that I’m very skeptical of fasting doing anything. I

Thanks for the response. I’ve been doing yoga, swimming is not something I’ve tried. Agreed on how crude tools can be effective, I’ve already made lots of changes (I only use a standing desk). I’m very skeptical of saying being effective, b

Did you have any MRIs that showed actual damage? That’s the boat I’m in. I’ve tried a lot of things and nothing has worked so far. I’m happy to give another book a shot, but everything else I’ve read so far has not been applicable.

I do not. I’m a software engineer. I prefer clean and minimal interfaces and I think Firefox does a good job with that. And judging by some other responses, I’m happy to hear that I’m not alone.
