Word, thanks for all the details! Yeah, I don't have any actual business use-cases outside of a personal interest in making my dedicated server reasonably protected.

Thanks for your response! So using specific examples here for smtp, I get a 1gbps guaranteed network from Hetzner so in theory I’d need to distribute over 50 servers to withstand this attack? It’s not clear to me why fail2ban wouldn’t at le

I’d assume they’re not actually paying for these attacks and have access to a large botnet, which would imply no cost (outside of hours spent constructing the attack) to the adversary, right?

Is the attack on its webmail/website or on their smtp servers? I’ve been wondering about this, but how does one protect smtp servers from distributed attacks? Let’s assume smaller attackers, do you just need good firewalls in front of

I noticed better performance using native-comp in magit (and the rest of emacs for what it’s worth) on macOS. Might be worth a shot!

I haven’t used nim outside of some hello world toying a few years back. Is compiling actually that fast? I thought the nim compiler compiled to C and then called gcc (or whatever system compiler), isn’t that slow in practice? Any large nim

Switching is worth-while if your employer doesn’t have a clear path to promotions and you go a year or more without any pay raise or promotion and hear things like “we’ll reevaluate next cycle” often, without concrete steps to get there. As

Some big tech company salaries are higher than equivalent hedge funds salaries. Also, work life balance is better. I know some folks more senior than me at top hedgefunds making less than I am.

I was actually looking into this as well. I recently switched my server to NixOS and the declarative configuration has been really nice to work with and fits easily into my workflow/tools (emacs with tramp). I’d be really interested in

If you get a DIY version you don’t pay the windows tax. You can also install your own cheaper ram and toss in 64gigs. Assembly took me about 5 minutes.

What ISP do you use if you don’t mind me asking? I’m on Verizon FIOS and I’m convinced they throttle certain traffic. I pay for 940mbps and generally get around 800 wired or 5-600 on wireless, but have noticed my speeds (on VPN) drop to 2-3

Based on reported data from levels.fyi, senior SWE salaries in the US go up to $600k whereas in Switzerland they max out at around $400k. If looking at averages, there’s about a $50k difference.

There’s a lisp-like language without a GC called Carp [1]. I believe the goal was enabling real time applications and specifically games. I’ve only toyed with it a tiny bit, but it has an ownership memory model inspired by Rust. Pretty neat
