I don't understand why facebook repeatedly tries (and fails) to become a news source. They can make more money by being the world's watering hole, there is no need (and not much money imo) for going after the role of newspapers&#x

Fake news are easier to detect. Bias is always subtle and insidious.

The greek research network ran a number of high speed cables that were not infrequently cut off by careless fishermen. Used to mean a day of slow network until they find the damage and fix.

Especially in tech, nitpicking should not be allowed. Approximate is good enough for everyone, it's not like a battery is suddenly gonna catch fire.

Surely it makes sense, like everything else in these comments! If societal bias filters only high-performing women into tech, then the company that managed to snatch all the females would surely have an advantage versus all the rest. But le

Excellent observation, and lets not forget it's not valid only in tech. Let's not forget that every boy is encouraged (some would say indoctrinated) from early age to learn the art of cooking, and to spend the evenings preparing d

The fact that there are way too many IT people from poor immigrant backgrounds (no opportunities for anything you mention) discredits your first point. > it's GENERALLY because it is something that you very much care about and want

Following the logic of most mental gymnasts here, the best IT companies should be women-only companies by now. People seem automatically to turn off their brains when discussing anything that might oppose the orthodoxy of affirmative action

That is nowhere near obvious. Why not change the main link to the google search page instead?

But going back to the old corporate model is not necessarily better. In large part it's because freelancers are not really accounted for by politicians. Instead frelancers should unite to require the same rights .

Thats was not really valid. Every site is technical. There is far more business documents in dropbox than in github. Plus the purpose of the leakers is to create disruption, and apparently it works.

Social VR is what second life has been doing for 15 years. I have anecdotally surveyed a few users and none of them was sold on VR. It's fun for the first day, but between being expressionally and physically limited and getting nauseou

The US is not even in the list of most militant secular cultures. It's not a choice; You can't say "don't go" as if they have a choice to go to another country to compete.

Why did FIDE choose iran to host the competition and did they at least try to make sure there is an exception to this (absolutely reasonable) request?

No they can't pack things and move elsewhere because they have no papers. Asylum applications are processed in the country of entry.

Not correct. Refugees stay in entry-point countries until their refugee application is processed, which can take months. Meanwhile, many of them seek to find illegal ways to move up north.

These sentimental pieces do not help. At this point it's fair to say that europeans know the struggle of (legitimate) refugees. The actual solution is to end the war in Syria, instead of waiting for the rest of the country to flee, and

More mouths will be fed. The robots will still do the work for humans, in fact a lot more work. The questions is how to best distribute the wealth instead of concentrating it.

But someone will have to fund those robot armies, right? Could be a bunch of billionaires living in a libertarian floating city, or another bunch of bilionaires living in the most religious corners of the desert.
