The argument is that online anonymity itself also creates real-world consequences, such as character assassinations, harassment, and downright internet crime. If "Civility" means "being nice to each other", why shouldn't we value it, in and

Its irrelevant. The website stunt will probably get him an interview, then his performance in that will determine whether he gets hired.

1) Valid 2) You can't opt out of the ads. You're going to see them whether you want to or not. 3) You're opting out of the targeting, not the collection of your data. They will still have your data even if they don't use it for ad targetin

Wow. As an avid watcher of the show and graphics connoisseur, I didn't know that half those castles were CG. Very fine work.

This is what a bad media cycle looks like. You get a nosebleed in the ocean and the sharks start circling. They'll get through it, though, I am completely confident. At the end of the day, the bad guys are the assholes that abuse the system

The article is a second-hand account of a discussion with a low-level call center employee. I hardly think we should extrapolate Google's corporate policy from this account. Interesting to note the parallel with the post which claimed Faceb

Cool idea. How long did you guys work on this, with what size of a team? I'm thinking about getting into FB apps so I'm just curious.

Human labour is thousands of times slower and thousands of times more expensive (even at $2.00 per 1000) than automated solving. The fact that spammers have been forced to use such inefficient solution techniques is proof of the captcha tec

I can't decide whether I find things like this hilarious or disturbing. They could have fixed it with engineering, but they were either so uninformed or incompetent that they tried to fix it with a lawsuit.

Holy crap. They let so many people get away with copy-paste assignments, and they call themselves a postsecondary institution? That's fucking horrific. Where I'm from, a single sentence similar to one of your sources is marks deducted. A pa

PLEASE Note the comments in the previous post on this: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2770237 Summarized: 1) Trademarked images are banned from Facebook images, and Google+ is a trademarked image! 2) Considering the volume they deal

A million times this. I bet, with their volume, very few ads would make it to the human-review stage at Facebook. This was most likely caught by an automated filter that didn't like something (e.g., the trademark image) about the ad. Never

Am I mistaken, or can Google "turn on" G+ for any google account, and have that count as a G+ user? It doesn't seem like these numbers are very meaningful. We need monthly-actives to accurately compare to Facebook.

Actually, that's not too far off. If you were hired pre-2010 your stock is probably worth > $1 million by now. That goes up by some constant multiple for every year previous to that.

As a resident of Waterloo and student at UWaterloo, I can tell you this does not represent the opinion of the student body. It is true, UW has got a lot of benefit from RIM and we are very grateful, but half of us have also interned there,

I've been told by people close to the company that it was in the $50-100 million range. Given how aggressive the Backtype guys are, this doesn't shock me at all. $100 mil split three ways is quite a prize.

Agreed. Some of the points were downright incorrect. The "Mobile App" one completely disregards that, while the G+ Android app may be superior, G+ doesn't even have an iPhone app, while Facebook does.

How is them targeting advertisements at you in any way evil? First of all, it lets you use Facebook/Google+ FOR FREE. Secondly, well-targeted advertisements are far-and-away better for both consumer and advertiser than blind advertising. Se

Facebook's response to Google+ actually took place last summer and last fall. I was an intern there at the time, so I got to see it. Google Me, as it was known at the time, was clearly Google's first serious attempt at moving into social, a
