I worked at a hotel for ten years. You’d be amazed at the number of things that are suppressed. Dead bodies, bed bugs, etc all happen far more frequently than you’d think but are cleaned up quietly and quickly.

Do you use Fastmail’s aliases? Those are one way to pinpoint which service revealed your email address if you’re diligent about creating them.

Zoomed out, those photos aren’t terrible, but if you click to view a higher resolution version, you can see the softness created by the noise removal algorithm. Based on my experience, the image quality is comparable to DSLRs of about ten y

I've increasingly had reCAPTCHA refuse to give me an audio challenge.

Not reCAPTCHA, please. It’s horrendous in any environment that blocks any real amount of tracking. Rate limiting would solve the bot issue without inconveniencing regular users.

It provides you protection on a hostile local network, such as a hotel or a restaurant. Like you said, it does not achieve the anonymity level a public VPN would.

Anecdotally, Google+ failed for me because I got stuck in an authentication loop for a business page. It wanted to verify the business, but the link to do so always errored out, which made it impossible to ever change the page content beyon

Respectfully, why do you feel taxes are the best avenue for your philanthropy rather than donating personally to one or more organizations/causes? It seems like the former would result in far more waste and ultimately less getting to t

eBay has become my first stop for many categories of goods. It's not always the best choice, but it is often enough that it's worth checking. For example, both of my carbon monoxide detectors expired at the same time, and Amazon a

I actually print and use paper maps a lot, specifically topographic maps. We do a decent amount of backcountry riding, and while not completely accurate, the USFS and USGS maps have various trails marked on them that are useful. USGS publis

I think that's only one aspect of the current arrangement. At one of the extremes is the rise of the cancel culture. A subset of people have learned that if they complain loud enough, even in small numbers, corporations will bow to alm

By only profiling the top 1M sites, I wonder if this may be sampling from a set not normally distributed? I suspect the frequency of use of WordPress might go up the further down the list you go — some random blog is less likely to be on th

A Synology NAS + Synology Drive has replaced Dropbox for me. Drive isn’t quite as polished, but I have effectively unlimited space, and it’s more private.

I do similar but with an RV. Most of the time I work from my house, but I built out a network suitable for work and can effectively work from anywhere I choose to go. Sometimes I’m on cellular, other times I’m on satellite. No campground ha

I could imagine it tied into Find My iPhone and associated login stuff where the tech support member of the family can link in to it rather than making it a class of app that can be built.

I’m split on that. On one hand, I have fewer tech support calls because my mom generally has fewer problems with an iPad, but when she does have problems, there is no option to use any kind of remote desktop software. For me, the killer “pa
