Ironically, in my experience, when I immediately ask a question, the (auto-)response will still be "Hi, I'm <name>, how can I help you today?"

Thanks for your reply. I assume many startups use AWS or GCE (with auto scaling) and thus don't necessarily setup/SSH into each and every machine/VM. Wouldn't this make rootkit detection more difficult? edit: how would a

One thing I have always wondered: how do companies like this actually detect such a breach in the first place? HTTP and SSH log files? Also, how do they ensure that their systems are no longer compromised?

Depending on where, what and how you're selling, offering PayPal is pretty much mandatory due to customer expectations.

You're thinking of the "public" PageRank value previously displayed in Google's browser toolbars. Those are indeed no longer updated. However, there is still some variant of "PageRank" in use internally.

Probably somewhat. However, "link equity/power" has definitely (in part) been replaced by other ranking signals.

Yes, they did. But, depending on the details of the attack, I am not sure if any other provider could have withstood the attack without problems. In other words, I doubt there's a single provider/alternative.

Please. Dyn has performed pretty well in the past, and any other provider (be it UltraDNS, CloudFlare or anybody else) would be a single point of failure as well. As you said, the only protection (somewhat) is to have redundant/multipl

Yes, that's true. Then again, Amazon is kind of an exception because they run and host their affiliate program in-house. Most other shops don't (and therefore would require some sort of third party affiliate network).

I'm pretty confident that no one A/B tests URLs for SEO purposes. How would you A/B test this anyway? You can't exactly serve Google different URLs and see what works (in fact, this would ruin both approaches).
