Nice catch, that almost amuses me more than if it were deliberate. I wonder how that happened. FWIW, apps.ycombinator.com has the same problem.

Found another one, that's just an IP: 174.132.225.106 [ http://www.google.com/search?q=site%3A174.132.225.106 ] Another exact duplicate of HN, with 770,000 pages in Google's index.

Definitely true, but I became aware of this domain using Google to try to surface old threads. You get enough pages in the index, and it becomes a crapshoot on longtail searches. Here's an example: http://www.google.com/search?q=%22How+to+

You actually don't need all that much authority to get away with ranking scraped content in Google. Despite their FUD, Google's duplicate content detection algorithm seems to be largely non-existent. For example, check out the Google result

Even better, goto nissan.com. Despite their best efforts, Nissan (the car company) has never been able to get it from its rightful owner. Sounds like the system is working to me.

No, GoDaddy backorders is a drop catching service. For it to work, the domain has to hit the wild, so if someone bought the domain in TDNAM you wouldn't get it. Basically: If the domain you want was regged with GoDaddy, Network Solutions, o

Yes and no. Here's how it works: If you buy a domain and don't renew, theres a ~45 day "redemption period", during which you can pay a fee to get it back (GoDaddy charges $80 for this). If you don't, the domain is released back into the wil

Max, I usually like your stuff, but I disagree 100% with this one. I'm currently evaluating software DRM wrappers for a client. They're ready to spend 5 figures on the software, so it qualifies as an expensive developer tool. I've spoken wi

That is really cool. Great redesign. FWIW, this makes it feel more like a great radio station then a music discovery site. More Pandora than Hype Machine. Not a bad thing at all.

Some small things: - I'm not sure what you mean by "for Google Apps." Do they provide a platform like Zoho that you can plug into or does this simply mean you use their Google login and take advantage of Docs, Gmail, etc? This may be obviou

Apologies for my earlier tone. It seems there is some genuine confusion here. Thanks for posting the link, it confirms my suspicion re: leftover paranoia from the Moniker fiasco. A couple of years ago Moniker was buying domains their custom

Yeah the reason.com article didn't highlight that as much as it could have. I can definitely see how you missed it. The original NY Times article has more detail. In particular: The first time he was patted down, at Newark Liberty Internat

100% agree. I use lightboxes on nearly every site we build. They are an elegant solution to a common problem.

Agree, and it also requires jQuery and jQuery UI. That adds another ~150 KB, depending on the jqUI package you select. Nice looking lightbox, but that's way too heavy for my tastes.

While I agree with you, I also find HN's frontpage to be the most interesting list of links available on a given day.

Good point. I suppose this is more competing with Paypal's standard payments (free), as opposed to Paypal's Payments Pro ($30/month). Although even with the free Paypal account the user can still pay with a CC, on paypal.com. What alternat

Thanks for the correction. I picked that up from the other article on Yelp today, but reading it again I think I misinterpreted. Quote in question: Business owners contend that they just want the same opportunity to respond to negative, fa

Interesting, I've always assumed the reverse, which is my main interest in Amazon payments. I assume mainstream people are more likely to have an Amazon account than a Paypal account. Anecdotally, my sister, father, and grandfather all have

I'm not sure why this had to turn rude. 1) You don't need to hit enter, it looks up the domain as you type. Pressing enter to be redirected to GoDaddy is a convenience. There's a bunch of other useful shortcuts too, like Ctrl + S. 2) I have

[Edit: this is in fact false, see comment below] I doubt that is the case, if they respond in a calm, rational manner. That's a big part of the problem. Owners can't respond publicly to complaints on the site unless they have a paid accou

I use Google Voice as my primary personal number, and have had several folks tell me that it "rings and rings" (voicemail never picks up). And I would have to agree, their transcription is a joke. All that said, its still a pretty damn good

If by "posted to GoDaddy" you mean showed you a registration link? No idea what you're talking about. I've been using AjaxWhois for years, there's nothing shady going on.

Exact match domains are overrated, unless you're going for long-tail keywords with little competition like Patrick. Spend a few hours with AjaxWhois.com and find a workable .com. You'll be glad you did later.

None of this would have happened if the manufacturers and carriers didn't fuck up. Is this to suggest Google wouldn't have released a phone if they were more impressed with the G1, Droid, et all? There's been "G Phone" rumors for at least

I have a few ideas: 1) No comments on a post until its at least an hour old 2) More time to delete my comments. I made one just a few hours ago I'd like to delete because of its tone. 3) A "stop being a jerk" flag. It would only be shown to
