Alright, well can we at least agree that you should disclose when you knowingly give advice that violates US law? Surely you can see how this could cause problems for someone else who has the bad fortune of taking your advice at face value.

I don't think we disagree. Mind bearing with me for a moment? Probability of A (round 1 / selecting the right urn): 1 / 2^32 (32 games, 2 possible winners for each) Probability of B (round 2: 1 / 4^16 (16 games, 4 possible winners for ea

I'm not trying to give you guys a hard time. I'm glad you're doing well, and are paying your interns now. However , you're still advising people to break the law on your blog. Its a weird, perhaps antiquated, and largely unknown law - but

You should read the article you linked. Its actually a very good discussion of the subject. Technically, you are correct - there is a such thing as a legal unpaid internship, according to some interpretations of the law. This would be when

Nice! Thank you. One thing: "this assumes you can pick a loser from round 1" You can pick a loser from Round 1, because all selections are made before any games are played. So it looks like its: 1 / 2^32 * 1 / 4^16 (And we should probably

ESPN is a great example. This year no one predicted even the first round correctly, much less the first two. In fact, only 3 people out of 5 million got only one game wrong in the first round. The main problem with your logic is that most

The article misquotes the odds of picking the first two rounds correctly. 1 in 13,460,000 is the historical odds of picking the first 2 rounds correctly if you always picked the top seed in each game. In other words: think of the tournament

And he picked two rounds in a row . Since all 64 teams could theoretically make it to the second round, the odds are more like: 1 / (2^126) I'll have to leave it to Wolfram Alpha to expand that one: http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=1+

The lottery is a poor, if often used, comparison for the odds involved in picking the NCAA tournament correctly. Picking 2 rounds of the NCAA tournament perfectly is orders of magnitude harder than picking the winning lottery numbers. For s

It sounds corny, but the best solution is improving the quality of life in Somalia. Specifically, rebuilding their economy. The "cost" of piracy is already tremendously high by any standard. Its only an attractive option when its the only o

I do, but I also like the option of a good date picker. Ideally a text input with a calender icon next to it, instead of a calendar that automatically shows on focus.

For those who may not know (I didn't), Sass is a meta-language for CSS, which adds variables and some syntactic sugar. It stands for "Syntactically Awesome StyleSheets." http://sass-lang.com/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sass_%28styleshe

The problem is that unless two properties are actually going to work the same way, we can't use the same prefix. We have to be able to target individual, misbehaving browsers. Its not just IE that's quirky - Firefox, Chrome, and Safari all

A couple of UI things: 1) Can you make it so I can click anywhere on the box instead of just the company title? 2) Putting the item I selected at the top of the list is OK, but unexpected. I would expect these links to go to a profile page

Short version: You can't have unpaid interns, unless you're really just doing it for their benefit because you're a nice person. If they generate any value for you, its illegal. This situation is clearly against the spirit of the law. I am

I doubt YC would fund an adult site, but who knows? I'm not categorically against it though. For one thing, porn is a proven money maker, and as evidenced here at least some of your potential competition won't touch it. Regarding the 3 styl

That's probably the main issue. HN's authority and DoFollow'd links make it a prime target for linkspam. There's a lot of reasons I'm bummed about this, but I have to say: startups missing out on free PageRank is not one of them.
