Such a great read. I've done similar historical research and it's always so satisfying to get that final document that solves the puzzle. It's amazing what you can find online and in archives, and how helpful people are along

That sucks. Everyone has been there. On my first sysadmin job I did an rm /* as root and then discovered my backups across the network to a remote tape unit had a buffering issue and were basically useless.

I did my green card interviews and got my citizenship in that USCIS building, and based on what I observed first hand in the waiting room, I'm not entirely surprised they are monitoring cell phones in the area.

Exactly. You can buy a $1.99 movie on your Google account and that stops expiry indefinitely.

IMHO many of these US and EU comparisons don't pan out due to scale. Switzerland is a small, wealthy and densely populated country compared to the US. Utah alone is five times the size of Switzerland. Swiss GDP per capita is ~20% highe

I spent a ton of time in 2022 looking for people adopting USD for game development and came up with nada. It's popular in vfx but nobody in gaming seems to be adopting it in any way I could find. Has that changed since?

You can be indignant about the weaponization of the ADA by attorneys driven by a profit motive, and still respect the intent of the ADA.

I thought CP2077 had lots of interesting character stories, for a video game. Not only were there four or five interesting sidekicks/romantic interests, but several missions and literally hundreds of shards, each a short story.

I followed EESTOR closely for years. Someone should make a documentary about that saga. Amazing mix of inventor hubris, Canadian OTC pump and dump and a rabid online community of true believers mixed with speculators. Hard to believe that

RIP Kevin. Too young to be gone. I only met him once but he was definitely one of a kind and his story inspired a lot of people.

Activision isn’t successful? They own several of the biggest franchises in console, PC and mobile. 2022 was a record year for them - over $7b in revenue - and that was before Diablo IV shipped.

I think Dolby's desire to market the Atmos brand is unfortunately beyond what the tech can deliver. Atmos works great for people willing to invest in a high end system, especially for the right content, but it's diminishing return

I've had an Atmos system for a few years and it works great for movies, both on 4k disc and streaming services. Almost all of the Apple TV+ content is Atmos encoded. The $500 system in that video is entry level Atmos, my system is 5.2.

The differences are usually overall efficiency (that Trane is one of the most efficient models, SEER rating of 29.5), noise and overall capacity. This was for a >4000 sq ft house with extensive west facing glazing, not an ideal scenario.

If you are interested in a somewhat gonzo story of early cryonics from an insider perspective, check out Bob Nelson’s book, Freezing People Is (Not) Easy. Fun read.

$17k is about right for a top of the line 5 ton Trane XV19 with gas furnace option. The high efficiency/low noise units are expensive.

Congress put it in a bill. Not sure exactly what happens if they don't do anything, but I wouldn't be surprised if the car companies sued, because it seems like they've been asking for this for a long time. H.R.3684 - Infrast

NHTSA definitely seems like one of the more dysfunctional agencies. The US headlight standard from 1967 has never been updated to allow modern adaptive headlight designs despite at least two decades of requests from car manufacturers. Congr

I tried to buy the Mercedes EQS with that feature. All the dealers had a $50k markup , you had to wait months for delivery and most of the cool features in their marketing were not available due to parts shortages. So call me skeptical…

Given that Tesla tried battery swaps and canned it, and that venture funded startups already burned a billion dollars trying it and failing, I don't think many companies are eager to repeat the experiment.

65 is hardly old though, and the population of people over that age is only growing. You’d be better of having some kind of public service test every decade for everyone than an arbitrary age cutoff that is going to result in a lot of waste
