Can someone elaborate on the idea changing after being accepted? Do you go a month of working on your idea, only to realise you're at a dead end - and be asked to think of something else? Do you fall back to one of your second ideas? Do men

Usually 1,000 ad impressions is around $1.00 (varies greatly though, can be lower like $0.15c and higher like $4.00+). Assuming $1.00 per 1,000 impressions, and taking their 2.07billion impressions/month figure: Roughly 2,070,000,000 / 1,00

I've looked at a few freelance sites before, but turned away because all the "Requests for help" want an e-bay clone for $200. It's at that point I think the entire site is rubbish (low quality offers for work etc), so I think you may want

It would be cool to have a "canary" system in encryption. For example, without having entered the 'everything is OK' password every week, the drive/encryption automatically destroys itself. So if the drive is ever compromised, or you are se

I'm from Australia, but when I enter text into the "Near" box it says "Please match the requested format.". What format was requested? I tried a postcode, and suburb, neither work. Confusing as :(

Thanks for this post, I will need to try it. I agree the few times I've been up early to code (even to catch up on some work) its been good, felt like I got extra hours to the day (well, I guess I did!) even before I officially started. I t

It may just be people need a reminder sometimes - like someone taking you aside and saying "hey, did you realise how many interpreted your comment?". Imagine logging in to HN one day and seeing a black screen or something with your comment

The best error messages are simple, explain the problem, and how to fix it. It's frustrating to see 'Windows Update failed: Error code 0xXYZABC123' - that's no help to me. Or see an error about 'A problem occurred trying to do this and that

MySQL has a CSV storage engine, just give it the file to load and you can read/write using SQL.

This sort of thing needs to be shown on the blackout pages, so people can easily do something (call to action) instead of just leaving the page.

I'm not in America, but what about even just saying what key combination you should press to get through the menus to talk to a human? I even hate waiting for the slow voice to read out the options!

Frustratingly I read that and it doesn't mention what SOAP is or why the site needed to be blacked out. It goes on to explain action is needed and that wikipedia is supporting the blackout, but I've not really learned anything at all :( It

Unfortunately, like (every single debate ever?), there isn't enough time. A few people never got a chance to speak, Alexis is rightly looking a bit frustrated at not being able to respond at times. Why can't a debate last for 5 hours instea

I'm not following SOAP very much, so this would bring some more attention to it for me (I'm not American). I think it would be important that any blackout actually includes a call to action though, not just a message saying the site is offl

Appreciate it, thanks. I definitely have tests that run instantly because they just use a mocked database, and ideally all of my tests would do that because I agree having them run instantly is so much better than waiting around. I'm going

Before we started coding, we considered the (pretty cool!) PhoneGap system, but not Appcelerator (which we just reasoned as being similar to PhoneGap) or MonoTouch for that matter. PhoneGap was considered initially because of course it woul
