Dev and devops shouldn't be separate people anyway. If your devops person isn't also working on the product you're doing it wrong (in my only slightly educated opinion).

I am yet to see a "free speech absolutist" defend anyone on the left (where's the outrage about Republican school districts banning books?). It just seems to be a convenient excuse for being friendly with fascists.

Oculus was an aqcuisition, although I guess it does prove that Facebook at least had the taste to know that Oculus was doing a good job.

Is this just because estimated valuations of private companies are much more grounded in reality than speculation on public tech stocks has been?

I don't know why we should assume that a company will be successful in one area just because they've been successful in a totally different area - I wouldn't expect a text/photo based social media company to succeed at c

The Vive is just as good as the Oculus (VR games with a decent gaming PC hooked up is a much better experience than the all in one stuff that's running on mobile hardware). I'd also look out for the PSVR 2 when that releases - j

It seems more likely to me that they have art directors, they're just the same ones that design the weird corporate advertising art with the tiny heads. It's very "safe" for lack of a better word. Safe works when you

The thing that bewilders me is that this has already been done with stuff like VRChat, but FB seems to think they can come along with a weird sanitized corporate version of the same thing that doesn't do anything at all new and actua

It looks like a wii avatar from 15 years ago and the motion tracking is all jittery, FB is trying to win the VR market with this garbage?

The twofaced advertising really bothers me - they promote the iPad pro as if it's a "pro" laptop/desktop replacement, but it's clearly just designed for the same use cases as any other iPad/Android tablet.

I wonder how much of the work on getting it to run on M1 macbooks is transferable to the iPad Pro (which also uses the M1 chip).

Could you leave an empty socket for a wifi controller chip but still build in the antennas? Although that would likely lock you into whatever chip had the right pin out which seems a bit pointless.

Emulation hasn't been a niche thing since the 90s, emulating older systems has always been wildly popular. Emulating the Switch specifically is maybe a niche thing because the emulators are relatively new, the system is still sold and

It is possible that the lower CPU time scanning barcodes vs scanning color images and detecting the stamp is a big enough optimization to be worth it at scale.

Is it to stop counterfeiting? It could literally just be so that stamps can be scanned automatically to check whether they are the right denomination, which squares up with "facilitate operational efficiencies". Is "added sec

This is my favourite part of PID controllers, you can just arbitrarily not implement bits of them and still come out with something that approximates what you need. (Or endlessly oscillates around what you need ;) )

You're talking about different things - $20,000 is pretty close to the bottom end of new car pricing in the USA. If you want more economy than that you have to buy used, which I'm sure will be an option a few years after those $

Basically all AAA games will run relatively smoothly (30-60fps) with low-midrange dedicated gpus which is effectively what the M1 performs like on paper (I think it's in the ballpark of the NVidia 1050/1050ti/1650). You just

A lot of people on this thread are hemming and hawing about latency, and how game streaming services are never going to work out and so on. But imo this is not really true. 60fps 1080p gaming with less than ~50ms latency from controller to

You can get high quality streaming video with much less than 1GBPS, low latency and consistent speed + latency are the important parts. (Needed bandwidth will still be higher than regular video streaming though, as you have to compress

Yeah, the latency on a lot of TVs outside of "Game Mode" is really atrocious, commonly in the order of 100 - 200ms, which is way higher than even network latency on game streaming services assuming you're close to the data

I assume people don't buy "dumb" TVs because they basically don't exist any more, outside of industrial/commercial screens that cost way more than an equivalent consumer TV or PC monitors that cap out at about 32&qu
