I keep my server at home. I used to look after colo servers. If you go colo try and find a fixed price for data transfer. Power is also a big factor in colo. You can generally get 1/4, 1/2 and full racks.

I teach and one of my students, with little IT experience, asked me last week about the security of package management. I found myself using the many eyeballs argument. It only takes one set of bad eyeballs. It seems to me that down through

I left the IT industry just over a year ago and have some observations. Hopefully they will bring a smile and some encouragement to the stressed. - Devs can be dicks to each other - Managers can be dicks to devs and vice versa - Devs need t

Seems like a great idea. I've been thinking about using ssl client certificates to secure access to my home web server. I guess that's what you are doing. I haven't done anymore than think about it :-) There's a lot of d

Thanks for the update. The laziness doesn't surprise me. I have often thought of running my own mail server. I have had a free business plan on Google for a long time. I will hold off until Google totally hack people off.

Agreed. I used to build servers and put them in datacentres. It was amazing seeing how the specs went up and power usage went down through the years. I recollect new HP Gen9 Dl360s idling at about 200w.

I've been monitoring how much it costs to run an hp i5 6th gen desktop 24/7 over the last few weeks. I use it as my main server. The electricity cost is coming in at about £2.50 per month (idles just under 20w). An old hp dual cor

Ok government, give Deloitte the contract in a crisis. Pay them a year after they deliver. They are not short of money. Penalise them for not delivering. Or alternatively spend a few billion making the government more business savy. It will

I have been using linux for 20 years. Backup your device and dual boot linux with whatever OS you are currently using. If you go all in too quickly you will exasperate yourself. As for Arch or Debian, I think the answer is Ubuntu.

I was on an accelerator last year and am frugal. I don't think being frugal helps in the startup space. It may signify you are risk adverse. I think people should be frugal. I don't think a company should be frugal A frugal compa

It is good for individuals to work hard and invest in learning. I like the comment by John Wesley that you should make all you can, save all you can and give all you can. I think we often experience disappointment in life when we seek much

I fixed it by getting a 9-5 job. I don't think it is a question of respect as much as culture. If I were to contact my colleagues now out of hours they would think I was mad. In a small IT company out of hours contact is the norm, espe

I am happy to have left the industry but would not have done so over an IT fad. I left as managing an IT infrastructure takes up a lot of headspace. Even if you aren't working all the time stuff is on your mind. I'm very happy in
