Dang will probably say this better, but: >> Remember HN's rules of etiquette << If you want to engage using different norms, there are many different places on the internet to do that.

Also, the tedium of one phase of life is the delightful memories in the next. For example I ate the exact same breakfast for years in my 20s, but now I couldn’t recreate it because it didn’t seem worth capturing.

Do you have any stats or other evidence that it’s taking off among kids? I know teachers in our affluent town and have not heard anything about it (though I haven’t asked).

Your point about coordination is a great one. In a perfectly rational world, even and economically self-interested one, there are many ways that the thousands of educational institutions around the country could pool their money to build so

The assumption many in the field make is that _someone_ is going to create General Purpose AI, and we'd rather it be people who want it to be 'good' (aka 'aligned'). Best case, that AI can prevent the creation of ha

This article isn’t wrong, but it lacks a sense of cost effectiveness or trade-offs. Lottery tickets also increase your “surface area“ but they are transparently more expensive than they’re worth. Reasonable people can debate whether “build

Not myself, but check out Reddit’s FatFIRE subreddit for many anecdotes and discussions. I was actually uninspired by the stories I saw of lifestyles of those who “made it”, but YMMV and they generally seem to feel it was worth it.

What's tricky about this stuff is that it's in between a "thing you're allowed to do" and "completely unacceptable". I'd suspect it's close to to former than the latter, but even with best effort

There's a whole 'interpersonal' section that has little to do with money. Even under 'Make the most of your resources' there are ideas like "Tape over annoying LED lights". It's worth reading deeper.

I was interested by their mention of "A 2021 systematic review of 102 randomised controlled trials"[0] so I looked it up. The effect size was 4x bigger in mid/low income countries. So, while a valuable result, it might not ge
