Fair point. And thanks. I think now that my position - while how it should be, consistent with the GDPR and repeated at multiple places - is possibly not in line with a court decision from 2019 or so, that interpreted the e-Privacy Directiv

Since they sell ads that look like search results (which you agree on), they arrived at the same point of selling the top search result positions. Keeping that in mind I don't feel like the tweet is a misrepresentation. Do you, really?

Also the e-Privacy Directive does exempt strictly necessary cookies from any consent requirements, or am I completely confused now? Edit: No, I'm not. The GDPR page I linked states the situation that follows both from the GDPR and th

Well, it depends. If it's a short video that fits into your available traffic that you can just self-host with a video tag, why shouldn't you take that option? If it would be a huge burden like where you really would have to devel

Sorry, but an opinion from 2012 has no chance to be relevant if it disagrees with the current GDPR interpretation I linked to. Note how it explains that the ePrivacy Regulation is not in effect. I do not see how there could be any basis to

I think there is not. You are not allowed to download the video and host it yourself, that would be a copyright violation. Am I missing a legally valid way?

I agree that this is a big danger. When this thinking is taken too far you have an easy weapon in hand to destroy websites of your competition, the result would be having no websites in Germany anymore. But so far I've only seen clear-

That specific scam does not have to work anymore though. Abmahnungen in Germany are the most stupid and lawyer serving system in the world, but the CC image scam got closed by judges deciding no monetary harm was done. Possible that these l

Why "what the hell"? This is exactly what happened, and a logical consequence the moment IP addresses are classified as private data. Which it is in a system where it can be used to find the civil identity of the user, which is th

It's possible I did not notice the non-audio part was already in the wayland-enabling distros before, if that was the case.

> Was Pipewire even on distros by the time they decided to "abuse the one API"? No. Pipewire only arrived on the most unstable distros end of last year. It's in no way available for all, and not a common standard (yet).

No, you pretty much can't - not as an US-american company at least. That's what this problem is all about, and why the privacy shield deal between the US and the EU failed.

The site you look at is a product of the browser after it interpreted the HTML. While the HTML may be protected by copyright, whatever the browser makes of it is not touched by said author copyright. The browser is free to manipulate it how

That's not nonsense, it's very relevant to this case and just the facts. That the judges in Hamburg are not suspectible to facts or reality is on them, not on HN. And actually, it is what an expert courts should and do commission

No. The law is very clear that you are allowed to make copies. For some time now you are not allowed anymore to circumvent copy protection for that, which is an illegal law but still standing, but even this is not happening here. The indust

There are two standard that are used for the push setup you describe already! :) RSScloud and Pubsubhubbub/websub. I don't know whether Thunderbird supports it, but pretty much all the big RSS clients do.

Pretty close. To be fair, the RSS-as-social-media was a thought I had a decade ago (more than a thought, there was a working prototype), but that doesn't mean it's not in my mind now.
