I think the basic flaw here is that author assumes that NSA does data-mining. I personally doubt it. Rather (and here I'm going off on pure speculation myself) I think they can use the system to start with some off-line lead (say one o

I think the piece is bad because it has not structure. Ie it's a train of thought that is difficult to follow. It's as if you wrote down shorthand notes during the presentation and then shuffled them around and dumped them in a do

Right, but the article jokes specifically about atheists. This century they sure are a peaceful bunch - but past record is pretty atrocious. On the other hand, one could make a case that communists were not 'true' atheists - they

It could be just me, but this story bothers me a lot more than all the non-stop coverage about NSA. Perhaps I had always expected NSA to snoop on everything on the internet whereas this shows complete breakdown in common sense by the govern

It would be 'funny cuz it's true' only if atheists were not responsible for the greatest amount of death in the 20th century (ie Communists of various shades in Russia & China).

I decided to respond to this part of the thread to keep discussion in one place. --- So your point is that since 2.9% of US population are not single-race (estimate of mixed race in the US [1]) the other 97% aren't either? By the same token

Me: Blue and Red are different colors. There is a branch of physics called optics that deals with it. You: But what about Brown - is it blue or red? I guess you can't answer, therefore colors don't exist and are instead social constructs.

There should be a name for articles whose body adds (virtually) nothing to the title itself. That is not to say that the title is not worthwhile - but you can save yourself the trouble of reading as long as you got the title :)

So I guess the issue can be broken into parts: 1. Airbnb has every right to demand that its users get verified. 2. The way they implemented verification is suboptimal. My read of the article/comments shows that most people disagree with #1.

I'm with you. All these people strike me as entitled twats. As a user, I would much rather deal with the hassle of verified ID than do business with guests/hosts that are unverified.

I think your mistake is to suppose that we use the adjective 'barbaric' to somehow demean or dehumanize its practitioners. Ie - because they are black/brown/muslim that we allow ourselves to use this language. That's 100% wrong (and is well
