What's the manufacturing process here? Is it feasible that fabs for this kind of thing could reduce in price over time to the individual or makerpsace level?

Two things: 1) I wonder why this wasn't written in a language that can compile to wasm, so it could be used on both native and js without reimplementing. 2) Can someone contrast hypercore and IPFS?

In many contexts, solarpunk is related to anarcho-communism and gift-economies. It can be difficult to see how a solarpunk-like society could sustainably grow directly out of our current economic system.

This paper is surfaced pretty often and it's misleading. Rust is all about making abstractions around unsafe code that cannot be used unsafely.

This is neat! I wonder if this kind of functionality would be accessible through a language server, so multiple text editors could use it.

And it's going to be beneficial for Rust too. Just there's no reason to have multiple frontends.

Yeah, that outcome is still pretty bad. I don’t think there’s any value gained from multiple frontends here. It’s unlike the PyPy situation in that a Rust GCC frontend is not going to have better performance, at least at runtime, from rustc

I disagree that multiple frontend implementations is going to be a good thing for Rust. Multiple backends is great, but multiple frontends could result in Rust getting held back to the lowest common denominator. C and C++ have multiple fr

You can actually already do this. There's a fork of rust that uses the xtensa fork of LLVM.

Just solve the aging problem first. That seems to be pretty close at hand anyhow.

Fascinating. I wonder if it'll someday be possible to clone an animal from just their genome, without needing to store physical samples.

It probably can't yet on stable, but it will be able to within the next year or so.

Given that we know of nothing that isn't material, I'm unsure of why it's reasonable to think material is not the fundamental thing of consciousness.

RISC-V is such a breath of fresh air compared to other ISAs. It's well thought out, elegant, and effectively solves issues other archs have. It kind of reminds me of rust in that way actually. More to the point, the LR/SC instruct

It's been shown that memory/personality/self is stable with no brain activity [0]. Perhaps consciousness is a transient process, but memory is not and consciousness can be restarted from stable memory. [0]: https://

If Microsoft didn't care about developer experience, they wouldn't be working on WSL. And as someone who interned at msft several times, I can say for certain they cared about developers.

This is true but it's also a tremendously annoying api to use. I think there would be a future for a better system interface that has all upsides of the win32 api, and none of the downsides.

Microsoft needs to go and redo the windows api at some point. Part of the reason why windows is such a terrible experience for developers is that it's so different from the posix-like apis available in macos and linux. Maybe they shoul

While `wasm-exec-webapp` isn't a real thing, if it's sandboxed as it would be, there'd be no difference, security wise, between that and going to a webpage in your browser

This is great. I'm a big fan of how powerful web applications are getting. Speaking of powerful web apps, I wonder if we'll see support for registering web apps as commands that can be run in a terminal.

I'd love to help with this. I've been experimenting with rustgpu + wgpu, so I'd personally go there first probably.

What a coincidence, I just reread that section of permutation city yesterday. I wonder if there is an efficient cellular automata that vaguely approximates the behavior of real chemistry, just like the autoverse. It's a shame the garde

I would include that in the psyop contingency. It seems pretty stupid to go through all this ado just for camera artifacts.

Well, assuming this isn't a psyop, this is incredibly exciting. These things are doing maneuvers that simply aren't possible with the technology we have currently. This means that the scifi future of our dreams is nearly upon us.
