The fact is many/most SWEs don't have the skillset or interest to do SRE work. While there is a lot of overlap, the work can be quite different between the two areas. SRE basically maps to the sysadmin role of old, which has never

I was in SF last month and saw a Cruise car get stuck in an intersection on Divisadero. I have no idea what it was trying to originally do, but it kept just going back and forwards perpendicular to the incoming traffic. After about 5-10 min

Does it really need to be low latency? It's not an FPS - so I don't think high tick rate is important. I'd rather have a wider synchronized global state and acceptable server side latency (<500ms) than instant server updat

Would an MMO backend be CPU bound though? I feel the use case of having a large numbers of active connections with the very distributed nature of passing events around between them all would be perfect for Erlang/OTP. Anything CPU inte

Yup I remember that. Netflix seems to be the poster child for overengineered architecture - for something that is almost entirely commoditised nowadays (one-way over the internet video streaming). Uber's problem space is significantly

I feel like the Erlang/OTP would be perfect for the MMO use case. It’s what I’d try first if building from scratch.

A similar thing happened to me. It's absolutely bizarre when it's happening and even more so in retrospect. Every engineer knows it's a product that no one wants. That experience triggered terrible burn out for me.

Nope. We still have one of the most privileged jobs around with plenty of demand for our foreseeable life times. Just don’t let yourself become obsolete.

Ime ram is either bad or good. I’ve had ecc errors like this and I always ask the DC to replace the ram. After that, 0 errors forever. Same reason why I’m confident a 24 hour memcheck is sufficient for non ECC ram.

It's the performance culture at these companies. An engineer gets evaluated on metrics they move the needle on. At very OKR centric companies like Google, these metrics have to tie into high level business goals like revenue growth. I

Support engineers are first or second line support, and typically limit their scope to customer errors/pebkacs. If you find a legitimate bug, it is typically escalated to the SWE team's oncall who maintain the service. For example

There is very little incentive for engineers to spend a lot of time on support at big tech. In fact it detracts time from their projects which tie to their performance review. Internally big tech would need to prioritise customer satisfacti

While FTC helps with most things, you can still get knocked for stuff that doesn’t fit into the US tax code. Like stamp duty - you’re taxed in the UK when buying property, then taxed in the US when selling (you’re exempt in the UK on your p

Very few people have real distributed systems experience. Maybe 1% of people who pass system design interviews have ever actually implemented or even worked on such a system. The nitty gritty of implementing a distributed system is orders o

It's a fixed amount. And hilariously outdated - it's based on property valuation in 1991. I pay more council tax on my modest home than some mega mansions in the area. The other silly thing about it is the tenant pays, not the own
