I don’t think that’s what podmansh does. Instead it’s a system replacement shell. Nothing to do with your running containers. Instead it seems to let you sandbox users on your VM/baremetal to a container.

I did the same as DiggyJohnson. And I'm introverted. Even introverts need human connection and interaction. And in my experience, being in an office is easier for an introvert. Being 100% remote for several years was terrible for my me

What do you mean it's decentralised? It's a central service you have to query for name->IP lookup, with authoritative name servers for every domain. It's the very definition of centralised. Just because it's hierarchi

I agree with this, having built large dev platforms on both. GCP in my experience takes 2-5x the engineering effort, to deal with "GCPisms" and the terrible documentation. AWS is simpler and does what it says most of the time.

Not sure if you’re being sarcastic. In my experience DNS is probably in the top 2-3 causes of global outages at large internet tech companies. It is a giant SPOF in most services, often having many hidden dependencies. I can generally tell

I think you got it flipped. It’s a lot easier to switch off as an SWE compared to SRE. I moved to SWE precisely for that reason.

Agreed. It's a common problem that many teams don't even realise they have. Same thing with stacked PRs. It's a wonder Github hasn't shipped with merge queue+stacked PRs by now.

Hi Alex, great blog post. I know exactly what you’re saying! I should blog more too - it is time consuming but it always makes me feel good. Like you say, we should blog for ourselves foremost and not worry about what others think. It’s alw

Ctrl isn't bad at all if you karate chop it with your palm. Doesn't work on a laptop keyboard though.

I noticed issues with networking as well. For example if I plug in an Ethernet cable, it will still use Wi-Fi as the default route in many cases - so I have to disable Wi-Fi every time. This works flawlessly on Windows/Linux in compari

Similar. I saw a dentist in SoCal when I was visiting my family (I live in the UK) and I was under some misguided impression dentistry was better in the US. Very fancy office, took colour X-rays, then told me I needed all 6 of my fillings r

Just think about what you said. "There is no value in a middle man". Do you only purchase goods from the person who made it? Our entire economy runs on "middlemen". Convenience has huge value to most people.

It's quite a statement. You're almost saying capitalism and efficient markets are pointless. Maybe they are, but I think it's nothing like crypto. In the old days before HFT, you weren't sure you'd get the best pric

It's basically The Wire in the making here in the UK. In 10-20 years, if not now already, we are going to have full blown ghettos I'm sure. Whereas 10 years ago I felt safe in most parts of London. Crime has noticeably gone up and

I think the only people who think exercise solves depression are those that have never suffered clinical depression. Dopamine from exercise is pretty much a temporary relief. Just like drinking, smoking, or binging netflix - they provide te

I live in London and think it’s a fairly correct statement. The conservative government basically imploded as a result of Brexit. We’ve had 4 PMs in the space of a few years, each more degenerate than the last. Covid further enabled cronyis

Big tech internal incentives really exacerbates this. The entire performance system incentivizes engineers to create imaginary problems and solve them. Honestly, I think a good chunk of engineering activity are along these lines. Literally

If you read more from Carmack, I think you can see why. He pretty much just works on things he finds interesting. Even at FB/Meta, he avoided the draining work of active leadership and was basically a research scientist that occasional

What you say is very true and I have seen it myself a few times (even being said consultant :)). I’ll add that platform engineering is where much of the hardcore engineering happens nowadays in modern software stacks. In the olden days, SWE

Thinking about it more, one cool thing about level scaling is I can play with my friends at whatever level they are. It doesn't really matter for the endgame at all, but when you're leveling up early on it is pretty nice.

The level scaling is a really bizarre design choice. Every game with this feels bad. There is no sense of progression as your character gets punished for levelling up. Some game designers think it’s a great idea though - hence it’s in D4. I

Just quit out of slack when you need to focus. I’ve done this before at gigs where people abused Slack notifications. The strategic solution is to improve the culture around chat notifications.

My experience is you lose any gains elsewhere - messing with config files, random apps breaking in a tiling WM, having to plan your workspaces, having to do like 5 chords to get the optimal layout, etc.. I also think i3/sway style tili
