The question to ask at this point is why compilers still target the emulated x86 opcodes and not the microcode directly? Also, speculative execution has proven to be an unsound approach in light of the spectre vulnerability right?

lol. That's cool but its not the intended purpose. Then again it doesn't fulfil its intended purpose anyhow.

I would say this is never healthy, even for a team of 2 people. These days merging code without at least asking for a review should be anathema for devs. Even a 'rubber stamping' review at least signifies a shared awareness of cha

The commit graph should at lest have a disclaimer of some kind. Plus I think the lines of code added/removed are a better indicator than number of commits. Perhaps with some heuristic to detect whether a lot of lines were being changed

I can't understand how anyone thinks github's commit graph is in any way meaningful. All it does it increase churn.

I think laptops aren't getting any better now. Because Moore's law is over we need to learn to get comfortable for the long haul with the same level of technology in general. Perhaps we can learn to do more with what we already ha

If there's no-one that wants to change anything then things stay the same. Ron Swanson will keep things running smoothly.

Quite a misleading clickbaity video. There was additional hardware added that provides memory protection. It's been done before. Nice description though.

The idea of even trying to force or 'encourage' others to change their minds is horrid. Let people make up their own minds. Do people ever think that maybe their ideas are the ones that are stupid? Only giving advice or recommenda

C isn't really what I'd choose for such things, but if you insist I remember libcurl was quite easy to work with.

I often think Art in general suffers from a lack of limitations now as well. Artists working with oil paints during the renaissance had teams of people to produce their often secret recipes for pigments or to fill in less prominent areas of

More's the pity. Now we just constantly delete whole branches of elements from the DOM and recreate them with react.js instead, which is far less efficient. React.js would probably cause your computer to use measureably more electricit

It's probably due to legacy software. If your software that uses jQuery ain't broke, why risk breaking it by striping it out? Does doing so even provide much business benefit? Probably not I'd say.

pdfs should certainly have more robust means to prevent tampering I agree. pdf integrity assurances aren't much better than ROT13 is for cryptography.

Pdf is meant for document reproducability. The fact it's glyph soup impedes tampering, which could be considered a feature by those who don't want their documents tampered with. i.e. to be presented to others exactly how they were

Extracting text from a pdf is akin to using text-to-speech software to produce a .wav file then expecting to still be able to edit the original text when only having the .wav file. Anyone wanting to extract text from a pdf would do better t

That would be nice, but WASM and likely WebGPU is too far behind the state of the art of GPUs to be useful in such situations today. NVidia only implements CUDA AFAIK themselves.

I think the views espoused in this article are not the best way to handle such situations. Bob should have pinned the dependency to the older version being used (assuming that can be done in homebrew) so that his companies usage of it can c

Another point to consider: Why does youtube permit ads to run that not only are not effective in generating revenue for the advertisers (as no users click through on them) but also harm user opinions of wanting to use youtube in general. Wi

Well I'd imagine youtube's infrastructure is very expensive. I guess they can no longer pretend the service they provide for free doesn't need to be funded. What did people expect?

An alternative will be produced if youtube becomes a hassle to use. 30 years ago people watched television, but the ads became too numerous. Now only boomers watch it at all.

I approve of this, but its hardly novel. Web browsers were originally intended to view flat html documents with hyperlinks between them. The concept of a web app is itself a 'folk' repurposing of technology. Another might be the w

Maybe the 'stack' could be a linked list in the heap as well, then there wouldn't be a practical limit to its size. Alloca being not great is an implementation issue rather than an issue with the interface.
