Maybe the 'stack' could be a linked list in the heap as well, then there wouldn't be a practical limit to its size. Alloca being not great is an implementation

Maybe the 'stack' could be a linked list in the heap as well, then there wouldn't be a practical limit to its size. Alloca being not great is an implementation issue rather than an issue with the interface.
