The Scala argument in Paper Tigers is incorrect. If Java-style static typing catches 90% of the bugs that can be caught with 5x more complex type system, I would say some trade-off for simplicity is acceptable and it is reasonable to just u

You should blog when you have something to say, not just because you want to critique someone.

The article doesn't have anything to say, except that they hate 37signals. Why does this get promoted here?!!

It is irrelevant if this series is "made up", what is important is that there is no substance in the articles at all.

Your version is much better: it explains what happened in detail and it has much less noise. I guess the one currently on the homepage is more upmoddable because of the creationists reference.

It seems you can't have direct threaded interpreter for JVM or CLR where the opcodes conform to specification that can't change between versions of the interpreter. The SquirrelFish announcement's list for future developments ( http://webki

If the websites you scrape don't want you to do so, they will update their robots.txt and ban you. If you don't respect that, they will ban your IP and/or take legal action. So just try not to piss them off.

Ability requires memory, at least for basic things. You can't be a good programmer and forget the syntax of the language you are working in. If you need to look up something as fundamental as switch statement in the internet, it's like a wr

You know the syntax of switch in the language you have been using in the last three months. If you don't, something's wrong!

The real estate here in Bulgaria may be a bubble too, although it hasn't bursted yet. Vacation properties' prices are already falling. Few people can afford to buy a place to live in Sofia. For those who can, quality is another problem. The

Google Reader archives the feeds. Just keep scrolling back. There is also a not-very-official API.

No, I don't think this helps. Yes, you get more bandwidth, but the signal-to-noise ratio drops.

It is good, but still low-bandwidth. Perhaps the reason for compulsively refreshing the homepage is that we just can't get enough. Any suggestions about how to make better online environments for people who care about similar things?

I basically agree with you, just I'm not sure which revenue sharing businesses are doomed and which are not. AdSense is obviously far from doomed. eBay is in the revenue sharing business as much as a game guide sharing site would be. What i

I tried the YUI and ExtJS grids. Both seem to have quirks, but in the end I chose ExtJS and it has worked for me so far. I looked at things like performance to add dynamically 100 rows, and general flexibility.

I don't think it is a choice. As described, entrepreneur/builder are two distinct personality types.

Entrepreneur. Woz is a builder. This may not be a duality with clear-cut boundaries, but nevertheless it strikes me as a very true one, one that helps me understand things. Introvert/extravert is not clear-cut either.

Scalability is important, but it seems the raw speed of websites to any particular user gets less attention than it needs. There is quite a bit of data that slow sites are much less attractive to users, even if they don't consciously realiz
