In my experience, for a typical website with a database backend, Rails is better. For more serious engineering where you do things yourself, Python is better than Ruby (in this case the framework is not that essential).

Psychohistory can work in a society very different from ours (and certainly not the one Azimov described). In our society randomness plays too big of a role. Some of the current sources of uncertainty (like technological progress, or the pe

Cakes have layers. It ruins them to cut them horizontally. And it is not convenient - how do you even hold the knife to do that? It is a bad example.

Aren't you comparing what Google has to what TV networks might implement? This is not very useful.

Really? Can you say why? I haven't tried it, but link counts look like a reasonable first approximation of pagerank. I thought this is also the consensus among researchers, e.g.: http://anand.typepad.com/datawocky/2008/03/more-data-usual.h

Perhaps "social graph" is a natural phrase only if you use the word "graph" naturally. It certainly feels natural to me.

I think Paul overrates the value of the global view on such data. Simple link count works well for evaluation of the importance of the web page until the Heisenberg effect kicks in (people start to adapt their pages to score better in the a

Sure, it does make a lot of sense. If you can do bigger things perfectly, this is likely to be very well rewarded, too.
