But there's a flipside to everything. The EFF is using this ad as an argument for search privacy, since the ad clearly demonstrates how a user's searches potentially reveal his identity. http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1111246 If anyt

No. Who is the iPad for? I don't understand the target market. People whose computing needs are basic enough that this can serve as a primary computer? It plays video, and runs apps, and syncs with iTunes, but so does my iPhone and so does

It's a common rumor that Jobs doesn't have plates on his car. This article speculates that it's not legal, but Jobs (or his staff) just pays the $250 fine if he's ever ticketed for it. Some of the comments also speculate that Jobs' car has

He did say "based on iPhone OS", but I wonder if he mis-spoke especially given that he's not necessarily tech-savvy. In all likelihood, the tablet OS will be based on OS X in the same way that iPhone OS is - many of the same architectural u

About 18 months ago I was driving on the 101 near Mountain View, headed north at 10pm or so, when a white Mercedes with no plate zoomed past me. I was doing 70, it must have been going over 100. Always wondered if that was Steve.

I agree with you, but your use of "begs the question" is wrong, and given that I'm in a pedantic mood (and that this is a mistake I've seen before on HN), I'd like to offer a word on the subject. Begging the question is a logical fallacy in

I agree it's not a good idea to visit a site known to be under attack, but merely reporting the attack will cause an increase in traffic. Here's a screenshot in case you'd like to see the site without visiting: http://drp.ly/edn98

One of the commenters makes an interesting point: is Jon Stewart doing what he does because he believes in journalistic integrity, or because he's an entertainer and this is just an act? I hope for the former, I really do. Maybe I'm not cyn

A stunning piece on a topic most of us would probably rather not think about. Ebert handles his condition with grace, and his conclusion — that what he misses most about eating is not the food itself, but the company — is food for thought i

Most people new to Twitter don’t get it or the value it provides. That’s understandable for any new social network. I joined Twitter in June 2007, didn’t understand it, and my account sat dormant until just a few months ago, when I became a

UMPC (ultra-mobile PC) strikes me as something of a misnomer for the tablet. A 7"-10" flat screen, non-foldable tablet PC would have to travel in a folder, or in a bag, or somewhere that's not your pocket. Seems like iPhone/iTouch would be

I've long maintained that you should only post online what you are comfortable with everyone - your coworkers, your friends, your employer, your parents - knowing. Now we can add the government to that list.
