Yeah, that's a lot. I've got a 5-year old 512 GB Samsung PM951 that's been a system drive in 3 Windows systems with 16-64 gigs of RAM, and over the course of 6200 power cycles and 16500 hours on it has only 35 TB written and

If they discover a huge security problem with the distribution you installed, they can contact you and help you upgrade to a non-vulnerable version? This like like what "technical support" is supposed to mean

Energy transports costs are non-negligible. In fact, in Europe I pay more for the grid transfer (~0.25/kwh) than generation (0.06/kwh).

In Europe where I live, electricity costs 0.06 euro for generation and then 0.25 on top for transportation to me. So eve if the grid is vast, transport costs are vast as well.

I've just started a browser app that allows you to create and restore layouts of windows with websites, with minimal graphical UI and which remembers zoom levels and scroll positions as well as has an auto-refresh functionality. The go

Me too, and I've watched many of my friends go through this as well. Basically, some people have jobs that are analogous to abusive relationships. Easy enough to get into one when you depend on your job to get money. And it is rarely a

Batteries inside a laptop have no reason to be glued in. Look at the sleek laptops from Dell or Lenovo. Somehow they managed to put an easily replaceable battery into all of them - even tablets - without sacrificing weight or thickness. Glu

Sony smartphones still have a headphone jack, so this should be less of a concern for them, I think.

If your hosting provider is in a country with DMCA-like laws, they can be targeted the same way GitHub was and would probably comply the same way as well. So was there really a point?

Btw, when I've been testing a "kill switch" on Windows (firewall configuration that doesn't allow internet access without a VPN running) using the built-in firewall, I discovered that - Chrome adds a Firewall rule on ins

Nobody mentions that USB-C enabled the production of laptop power banks. They are such a help for when you travel and want to work on a long flight or a train ride. Power rating is a mess, and manufacturers are all trying to mislead the con

Can confirm that both Samsung and LG cheap LCD panels (~$400) that I got this year do not force a network setup and work without it.

This was a change that Chromium introduced in July 2016. I remember it being slightly controversial at the time and the issue from the tracker being posted to HN :)

I'd argue that Valve doesn't need exclusives just yet. By virtue of being the default PC store they get plenty of games that are not on any other store. But this will change.

Quest 2 uses LCD screens instead of OLED, which probably accounts for some of the price drop.

So my interpretation is (IANAL) that the Entrouvert released some library under GPL, and then when a big company used this free library, they wanted some money out of them and tried to use copyright mechanism to circumvent GPL as a free sof

This feature, at least in VirualBox, is useless. Machines that run hyper-v core do not boot properly, have their memory corrupted at boot, etc. I wanted to use various things that rely on Hyper-V such as the Sandbox and WSL2 (last tried it

Well, we have other platforms to look at. Android, Windows, MacOS - they all seem to be fine regarding this issue. Not great, but not bad either, while offsetting the bad with their openness. The open web also exists and somehow doesn'
