I always find it interesting that the people who unabashedly admit they have minimal front-end experience usually have the strongest condemnation of the current tools.

It's become a hobby of mine to spot instances where template-based frameworks have to invent an API to add a new feature that comes for free with a JavaScript-based framework (i.e. React or Vue+JSX). Adding this to the list.

It being written in OCaml is why the tooling is poor. TypeScript integrates perfectly with most build tooling (e.g. Webpack) because it's just JavaScript like every other tool. To run Flow everything has to be shelled out to an externa

I find that most the most common situation where a class component seems simpler is because the component is broken -- e.g. someone took a shortcut and assumed a prop would never change, made assumptions about the comparisons needed in `com

I thought the same but the more I use TypeScript the less I care about it's typechecker. I use it mostly for the amazingly powerful IDE integration and so I don't have to remember if a `User` has an `id` or a `userId`.

This is the kind of stuff that makes me really love hooks. I've been able to refactor so much code cleanly -- complicated data fetching logic, ugly parts of my Redux store, confusing HOCs, window.setInterval spaghetti, etc. Really exci

I wonder if someone could design a country such that each "social nation" could operate largely independently and only be tied together by a tiny, weak federal government. A "united states", perhaps.

Your choice is to not build an SPA. There's nothing wrong with HTML, jQuery, and Bootstrap. I'm fairly convinced most JavaScript fatigue is the result of trying to build very simple web pages with tools designed for 10k+ LoC SPAs

Maybe you do but I don't. I spent a week learning Webpack four years ago and it's been paying dividends ever since. 99% of my job is building features, <1% is fuddling with tooling and configuration. If the hard part of your pr

Heartbroken to see "I Am A Cat" on there. Granted, it's probably too fanciful for many (and a lot gets lost in translation) but Soseki is one author I'd like to see get more attention in the West.

That's why I'm confused, that's exactly what this article is about. You're using React SSR to do the same thing you would do using RoR or JSP... unless the gripe is specifically with JavaScript as a programming language.
