I was thinking something similar when I saw this change. I know I am affected by by the comments score when I vote, but I think it's more of a moderating effect. I might vote down a smart ass one line remark if it has lots of points, or vot

The article made me smile too. Bringing the conclusion back to the analogy it sounds like he's recommending the girl from the bank just stop pretending and really be your girlfriend, forget the home loan, meet your parents and I'm not sure

I disagree. I don't want to hear what some marketing executive is doing with here daughter. Company twitter accounts are usually good inasmuch as they stick to a particular purpose. It's fine if it is commercial or promotional as long as it

An interesting question is what sort of bets are better placed in India. Presumably, business models that require labour more or less linear to scale would be the right kind to base in India. That is the opposite of what startup generally g

There is widespread support for the idea of allowing founders to immigrate. There is scepticism that this can be executed in a way that is a net gain. Some people are sceptical at a practical level and others at a theoretical one.

Let me play devil's advocate. People with new found faith often become alienated from their friends and family outside this circle. Sometimes it is because the conversion process is similar to rehabilitation and it is necessary to be remove

Some bits from that site which contain the closest thing to an answer to my questions. " What I have against the Church of Scientology (CoS) is its deceitfulness, its lack of compassion for its members (especially the hard-working staff), i

I don't really understand what it is about Scientology that pisses people off that much. You seem to be able to rally people against it more easily then you can against skinheads. What gives?

It's not just about good vs bad. It is also the fact that i can see what people didn't like it. Often there are downsides that are a big deal to some, those that rate low which may or may not apply to me.

I love that on HN you can get as a response to a vague & half-arsed comment a reference and link to an academic paper. Cheers.

It rubs me the wrong way when people make this sort claim about why others criticise them. Sort of a sophisticated version of a 13 year old girl's mother telling her that the other girls are mean to her because they're jealous. Richard Dawk

I'm hope I don't appear to be trolling or taking things out of context, but it did sort of sound like that, especially if one is skimming: I offend people by writing. And I do it the same way Michael offends people in person:

At the very least one would note that the effects don't seem to be predictable via the basic supply & demand theories.

Maybe it's because Amazon asks (and receives) written reviews as well. They make people think a little more. I assume there is still a bias towards the 1 & 5 stars though.

Actually, Amazon's review & rating system seems to be one of the few that works well. Seeing the distribution and reading the most useful positive and negative reviews works really well in my experience.

The reason I said wishful thinking and suction cups to the dead is that you are ignoring the central reason that we are having this conversation at the moment: Why are Newspapers as an industry contacting? If your answer is as applicable in

I'm not sure that that is exactly Ricardos law. That applies more to trade and specialisation. The basic laws of supply and demand (price of labour will adjust until all labour is employed) should theoretically be enough to cover it. But I

I think that it's impossible to rationally ignore the fact that economies seem to contort to absorb however many workers are available to it. I have yet to hear a totally convincing explanation for this, but it seems to happen.

I have not made that assumption. Neither has the essay as I understand it. It is simply a statement about how they are priced. Regarding your advice, that is somewhere between wishful thinking and suction cups for the dead.

If a company is funded overseas, they probably want to stay where they are and the investor probably agrees. A VC fund can probably pick up and move to the States if they wanted to anyway.
