Yeah but it's somewhat hard to determine how difficult a challenge it actually was to produce that piece of code from the outside. It may be a signal of competence, or it may be one of those things that seems really impressive but they

To be honest if I was an employer I probably would do leet code or similar. The logic would be that yes, many engineers are shy or nervous around people. But losing those is worth it since hiring someone bad that you have to fire (that wast

There's usually gifted programs in poor schools as well. This isn't a private vs public education thing. It's more about keeping bright students stimulated and not bored to tears and have their potential stunted.

I wish people actually did this with real mundane excel-like work tasks.

Wow, that comic really makes me question how much of todays complaning about work and life struggles has been a multi decade persistent thing - not just hardships facing this particular generation. (As someone who was 5 in 1996 and didn

Engineers automating themselves. This is why we should be kinda scared of software innovation stagnating. If we don't work on innovation we don't really have a purpose and a job.

I wish HN had way more technical overviews like this from people with experience. It's certanily new to me.

I'm gonna get downvoted but this is the same perspective I've taken as well. I can only have paralyzing anxiety for so many years before I just have to stop caring and get on with my life.

I think this self awareness to disable notifications if they abuse it mostly only occurs for engineering types or other people with a lot of self control. It remains a powerful engagement trick because it hooks into the brains of people wit

My rule is: Disable notifications immediately regardless, if I find myself wishing I had gotten a ping instead of opening the app to check, I turn it on (which never happens, it's off for everything).

In this case they're probably recordings, but you could imagine that they'd be procedurally generated in which case not necessarily. A call to `Math.random()` is a finite length 'file' but won't repeat.

I can't imagine most romanians are happy with their land being so cheap overall (and their economy not doing great) so I doubt most people living there would object to the local land prices going up (that's a good thing).

When did google get a TLD? Incredible. Can anyone register that or is it exclusive to the company? (Never heard of a TLD that only one company is allowed to register.)

Well the investment landscape in general is kinda drying up (innovation is getting harder) and AI is one of the few areas that could or is bearing fruit so that's a big part of it too (even hardware and software is kinda stagnating). I

I am definitely going to bet against the "AI winter is returning" idea by investing huge amounts of my time into understanding these algorithms. History doesn't have to repeat, sometimes that's the foolish prediction (th

They're a private company and it's a shitty thing to do. No one is saying regulation should necessarily step in, but we don't have to like it and we shouldn't not complain and not talk about it just because of that.

They probably did, but even if they didn't it may have come from the terrabytes of data they scraped from the internet. OpenAI doesn't care. They claim that it's derivative enough to go under fair use. And whether it is or is

Makes me wonder if there's an opportunity to make games for the mac. You can make decent things with a month turnaround if you're proficient and there's a lot of mac users. If they're this desperate it might be a lower h

This reminds me of the horrible state of mac gaming back in the day when almost no games existed for mac. (Minecraft was one of the only decent games I remember being able to play, due to being built on opengl.) Things aren't perfect o

First of all I wish you all the best and want to be clear that I'm not trying to be mean spirited. By engagement I mean something like likes per tweet to followers ratio, and I'm seeing around 5-10 likes per tweet on your account

It's funny how tools like these are supposed to increase engagement but if you look at the feeds of the twitter accounts quoted at the bottom of the page they all get really awful engagement.

It's definitely worth considering that these tools can have a counter productive effect though. It can be really off-putting to a lot of people to get a near instant DM right after following someone which seems pretty obviously automat

I would feel so awful if I thought I was interacting with a normal human and they didn't tell me they were categorizing my DMs to them in organized groups like 'web dev beginners' and automating their responses to me.
