If there was a 5% the market would crash 50% tomorrow. Would you call that an almost certainty that it wouldn't happen? You wouldn't hedge your risk? If there was a 5% that you would die tomorrow, you wouldn't feel concerned?

5% of Americans take public transit to get to work. I wouldn't call that an almost certainty that you need a car. An almost certainty would be maybe under <.001%

That’s good to hear. I went to a small college in Massachusetts that only had dial-up in 2008 and no cell service. The entire school shared a custom symmetric 10 mbit/s split over 500 people. Man those were the days...

Life tells you what you should do in two ways: what you like to do and what you are good at. Of course liking something and being good at it often go hand in hand. When you are good at something, it’s fun to keep doing it so you feel better

The only people who think Freudian psychology (and Freud’s more general writings) don’t have value are those people who haven’t seriously studied them. Not to say that they are 100% true, but there’s a lot of (profound) truth there.

Too bad that cost is levied on people who don’t even need or want those services. The rich, childless, houseless, and single are subsidizing services for everyone else regardless of whether they personally derive any benefit. If that doesn’

I mean, I don’t think you have enough information to say that. You might be able to say something about the distribution, but that doesn’t contain very much information about my likelihood of getting into an accident.

I own a motorcycle and, as a programmer, the difference between a modern car and a motorcycle is like the difference between a GUI and a terminal. My bike has no electronics, just an engine and some wheels. Never am I confused at what it&#x

You probably want 10 or 20x of that. Assuming your bets are uncorrelated and all have the same standard deviation, the standard deviation (volatility) of your portfolio is going to be: stddev_portfolio = sqrt(n)*stddev where n = # of invest

Higher expenses and the risk premium are orthogonal to each other. The higher the standard deviation of returns, the more premium will be charged to offset the uncertainty.

Risk means a higher standard deviation of returns, also known as volatility. But you’re right to bring up the exposure landlords have to the real estate market. It’s unclear to me whether low valued properties or high values ones have more

This is such a ridiculous article. Of course landlords are going to charge a premium in poor neighborhoods, because their risk is higher. They need to match the market's risk adjusted returns, so they need a higher return to balance ou

If the risk wasn't higher, landlords wouldn't make more profit, would they?

I'm not sure why you are being downvoted, because this is 100% the case. EMH posits that all risk-adjusted returns move toward the market Sharpe ratio. You can then modify the returns/vol by buying or selling at the risk-free rate

The efficient market hypothesis posits that you can only make higher returns by increasing your risk. So it would make sense that landlords make higher returns from poor renters than rich renters. They have to price in the substantial risk

Maybe, but America has relatively low taxes and high income. This is an anecdote, but I was looking at developer jobs in Europe and the salaries are pathetic. 65k Euros for a senior engineer with a 50% tax rate? Are you fucking kidding me?

PPP isn’t at all relevant in this discussion. People like to just bring up PPP like it’s magic, but it’s not. You have to understand the situations in which PPP is relevant and the situations in which it means nothing at all. Moreover, you

More than fair? Fair is what the free market decides someone should be paid. And according to google, for private prisons “fair” is a median salary of $32,000/year.
