I don’t think campus security is responsible for keeping students on campus and organizing manhunts if they escape. Comparing college with prison is patently ridiculeous. Why would someone expect that keeping someone incarcerated be cheap?

Unless joe is making more money by not working than working, that is extremely unlikely. Making money for all intents and purposes is the definition of creating value. There are some exceptions, but they usually involve distortion by the go

Inflation only occurs when the printing of money outpaces real value. Real value in the last 10 years has skyrocketed, so it’s not surprising that inflation has not been strongly affected by the increase of money.

Python really only has libraries that can’t be found in other languages in a small domain: data science, statistics, ML, and finance. Unfortunately for me, those are all things I do at my job. Outside of these domains, JVM libraries are muc

Are you saying it should be illegal to rent property? Moreover, have you considered who is going to benefit from the Amsterdam law? Existing landlords! It’s rentseeking (literally) on the part of landlords who don’t want competition!

Python has to be one of the worst languages used today. It literally provides no value except for an abundance of libraries. Maybe you could argue it’s easy to learn, but so is Racket or Scheme. It’s dog slow, doesn’t support multi-threadin

But python is both slow and inexpressive. No types, no match statements, no easy FP. Also the language is poorly designed and inconsistent. I’m practically forced to use python for quant finance at my job because of the network effect: nump

Is zsh slower than bash or ksh on terminals?

I find complexity more correlated with performance than simplicity. I am also very surprised at the eshell performance, how on earth is it faster than most terminals written in C? Elisp is the slowest language ever.

Why is xterm not included? It’s probably the most popular terminal on Linux. It’s also noticeably laggy. I’m surprised that eshell performance is so good. Maybe because it supports less features than a standard terminal? I use Emacs and Eli

I’ve taken 5-meo-dmt several times it’s probably the most powerful and uncomfortable psychedelic I’ve ever tried (and I’ve tried just about everything). Makes you feel like you are dying, would not recommend.

Are you suggesting that someone would sell a product for a lower price than what it costs just because people are poor where he sells it? PPP isn’t magic and you have to understand why some products are cheaper in 3rd world countries and wh

The point is that the cell towers are going to be the same price regardless of location. So PPP isn’t a good justification for why data is cheaper in India. That is all I’m saying.

See my above comment on why this is a fallacy. PPP isn’t magic, it only affects goods that are difficult to arbitrage. This is why oil is the same price pretty much everywhere in the oil. Because if oil was cheaper (including taxes and tran

That’s true, but the cell towers are probably going to be of a similiar cost in India vs US. Lower (because wages are lower) but similar because the actual equipment is going to be the same price. PPP is only relevent for things that have d

I live in Tanzania (moved from the US) and mobile data prices are also relatively cheap. I could get 4gb for 75 cents for 24 hours 11pm-5pm. Or I could get 1gb for 50 cents for 2 hours. The one I usually go for is 10gb for 7 USD for 7 days.

OpenGenera was ported to ALPHA64. Also, a VM exists for Linux/OSX. It works pretty okay. https://github.com/ynniv/opengenera you first have to get the opengenera sources, though. But they aren't hard to find.

I would say that OpenBSD focuses on correctness (security being a subset of correctness) and documentation while FreeBSD focuses on performance. Personally, I find OpenBSD much nicer and simpler. The performance isn't impressive though

I love OpenBSD, I used to run it as my primary computer. The only problem is that the performance is pretty terrible, and they are only just now getting rid of the global spinlock that kills SMP performance for a lot of workloads.

I think explicit types for function arguments and return types are a good thing, even in languages that support their omission. For local variables, it's probably not necessary, unless the type is especially complicated. Though, I woul

I wouldn’t call it very easy. You drive to a place and have some beers. Then you have the choice of leaving your car or drive above the BAC. Most people choose the latter.

Is being arrested for drunken driving materially different than having not been arrested while drunken driving? And hasn’t pretty much almost anyone driven drunk at least once?
