They are not licensed by all the major music labels like lala was. Not a 'legal' replacement.

This is awesome for Seattle engineers. Even if you don't work at Facebook it should give a nice compensation bump for all good engineers in the area.

I agree with your conclusion, but it is industry specific. I'd argue that in the tech industry, LA vs. Seattle is basically a wash in terms of career ceiling. Silicon Valley on the other hand...

This shouldn't be that surprising. Lala's deals with record labels weren't transferrable to an acquirer, so the real surprise is how this has ran for so long.

Hate to say it, but this is par for the course every time Facebook releases new APIs. They move at an insanely fast pace for a company of that size, and there's no free lunch, so the tradeoff is buggy software. I don't see a lot of first m

I've had several developer coworkers leave -- it's always been with 2 week notice, a nice lunch, and a farewell e-mail from the boss thanking them for their contributions. Would not work somewhere that handled employees leaving that way. S

The biggest privacy issue here are the social plugins. They're easily embedded in existing sites using an iframe which is hosted by facebook. As more sites adopt these, Facebook will be able to track every site you visit on the web. I don'

Does that setting keep the FB iframe request w/ my cookie and URL I'm viewing from being sent to FB? That's the real issue in my book.

I wonder if Apple keeps ambiguous apps like this on hold for when they really need a PR win. Maybe we'll see Google Voice next?

Yikes -- I don't know the specifics of your situation, but it's awfully risky to give up 50% of your potential salary if you're not a founder. If you're getting a very significant equity stake maybe, but would have to be a pretty incredibl

I agree that developing with MongoDB is really really nice. We'll see how it holds up under more load, but for prototyping data models I have not used a better stack than mongodb + mongomapper

I had Mozy and I used their built-in encryption to backup ~250GB. I went to restore some wedding photos while at my parents' house, so I downloaded their decryption utility, and started the decryption of a 10gb subset of my backup. Only ab

I'm actually not advocating for a database per customer. I was more wondering why you have so many collections -- surely they're not all representing different logical data. My guess is that you create some number of collections per custom

Very interesting that they have 17,810 collections (aka tables). I wonder if it is common w/ MongoDB to design a data model in this way? Anybody have more info on this tradeoff vs. a smaller but larger size collections?

Some fascinating data here. The 'do you enjoy giving oral sex' geographical heat map which is user selectable by age is great. It's kind of hidden at the bottom of the post -- to summarize, older women tend to enjoy it a lot more than you

Maybe I'm a cynic, but I wouldn't presume Joel has great answers for these questions. As DHH says in his post, he may just want to capitalize on the service's early success and take some money off the table.

I would guess most people who see prostitutes don't want other people to know about it. Every other Veblen good I can think of is the opposite -- the idea is to conspicuously consume.

I don't think it's purely fashion. In some ways the EVIL cameras are more functional. Just by being smaller and lighter they're much easier to carry around with you. As Gretzky said, you miss 100% of the shots you don't take.
