If your webserver machines are so secure, why put them in the database at all? Just store the passwords on disk there, rsync the password file across all machines and you're set. I kid, but I really think you and tptacek just have differen

I think the main challenge will be getting the labels to agree to lala-esque music deals with Apple. Most reports so far say that lala's licensing deals are not transferrable. That said, Apple really has to do something in this space. I c

Fred's post isn't about big companies doing talent acquisitions. It's about both why a successful startup would want to do this, and how to structure a deal correctly so both startups are pleased with the deal. I'm not disputing anything i

I think Fred's post is more about startups acquiring smaller startups based on talent, not about large companies acquiring for IP.

Dropbox is really awesome. I'm very impressed with how well they execute. Lots of companies big and small have offered the same basic service, but nobody has built a product nearly as good.

The point I was replying to was that "... third party apps are just as often or more used on iPhone than on, say, Windows and Mac OS X". I really doubt this is true given the lack of any killer mobile apps. I don't personally consider any

I don't agree. On the desktop there are 'killer apps' like Photoshop, Excel, Quicken, Final Cut, etc. I don't think there are any killer mobile apps yet. Maybe for some it's FourSquare or FB, but I can't think of one app I'd miss that's no

I'm not out to knock thesixtyone.com -- my point was just that I don't see a big change in consumer preferences occurring when it comes to music. thesixtyone.com and others might be able to be successful as a niche product, but most consum

They don't look so good compared to imeem.com, mog.com, last.fm, ilike.com though. I don't see flocks of people giving up on mainstream music. Your point that free music is feasible for some music is valid, but I'm not sure it's that import

It does. Replace "mobile device" with "social network", and any other occurrence of"mobile" with "social" and give it a read. Glass houses and all that.

I agree with your sentiment. I also keep quite a bit of money in cash, but these days I'm keeping less so since it seems likely we'll have high inflation in our future, given how much money is being printed. I've moved most of it to gold

One of the big improvements ruby enterprise edition made is to make Ruby's GC copy on write friendly. This allows you to run a lot more ruby processes per frontend in a web environmet, since you're usually ram limited. Afaik 1.9 didn't add

In Pandora's case it's almost certainly a fee per song, as it is the larger of those two values. Micahel Robertson (mp3.com) has a good write up of this http://michaelrobertson.com/ (i can't find permalinks on his site, wtf?) I agree it

The timeline might be kind of tight, but your best bet might be to interview at another company and get an idea how they value your skillset. Also, check out glassdoor.com and see if the company has any salary information posted there.
