The two phrases were used by two different commenters. I questioned that one was equal to the other. I still do.

As someone who has been using Java since 1.0, I welcome these little improvements but agree that the language is now a mess for a beginner. All of the little rules and corners make sense to someone who learned them gradually. To a beginner,

The reality of the situation has not caused me any discomfort. I remain unconvinced that the two phrases are descriptions of the same thing.

Does this existence of fewer women in a job mean that they are kept out by those who think them “undeserving of a career”? Only 4% of sewage plant operators are female. Is that because they are kept out of the industry?

And you think they are the same? How much experience do you have with the Japanese job market?

One is hyperbolic. One can believe that there is some bias against women without believing that they are treated as undeserving of having a career.

It is said that Hemingway leveraged the same effect by leaving a sentence unfinished when stopping writing for the day. I use the same technique to remind myself I am not finished with something. This is also called the Zeigarnik effect: h

As I remember it, the RSS readers under test did not correctly handle encodings, blissfully ignorant of the difference between UTF-8 and Latin-1. Many had processing pipelines that did not preserve encoding.

The first time I saw perfectly valid Unicode take down an RSS reader (in ~2003), it was an ü that did it. I have taken to calling that the kaboomlaut in unit tests.

Yes. California is an at-will state. The employer can terminate at any time for any reason. Unless they have a contract, they can do anything they want.

If I were a student, eager to solve math problems and become better at math, no book would be better than any other book at presenting and guiding me to problems that would improve my understanding?

You can buy a Dell with a cell modem. It’s more likely about the patent/royalty situation with Qualcomm. If Apple starts making their own cell modems, they will start putting them in laptops.

Just bill me by bandwidth used. It is ridiculous that one cannot buy a MacBook Pro with a cell modem. I fight with tethering at least once a week.

We already have a mechanism for absolving responsibility: the corporation. It allows shareholders to profit and not lose more than invested. When they invest in tobacco companies, for example, the system is working as designed.

There was no way to ensure that. In the end, a couple bits of burnt wood broke off and were floating. We went around in a small boat and gathered them up.

My father passed away in 2020. As he was a mariner, we wanted to give him a proper send off. We had him cremated and built a little wooden boat. We put his cremains in the boat and set it adrift and afire just offshore of Florida’s Treasure
