If programming shops were willing to hire people fresh out of college with English degrees and teach them programming Body shop consulting firms like Accenture have done this for decades.

If kids in the NYC metro area don't have an opportunity to learn programming in grade school it's because the schools suck. Perhaps if parents cared about their children's education, they could just relocate to a more forward-thinking part

If you can't double major in engineering and something else, you're either lazy or not very smart. Especially at a Canadian university... I mean, come on we're not talking MIT here.

Or one could say the former is full of Joe Sixpack clock-punchers who spend 50% of the day on ESPN.com whereas the latter are creating the infrastructure for the jobs the IT types will be going to DeVry for in the future.

One can safely assume that any given tech startup is 95% unattractive males.

Mentioning the average age is useful information. I read it more like a warning than discrimination. Now that I'm old, I don't want to be around 25 year olds, unless they are also attractive women.

I feel engineers are born, not made, so if you don't have it in your blood, you are probably better off just picking and choosing a few good CS courses, or maybe getting a minor. It also depends on the school. Many schools have pretty lame

The provisioning in iOS is truly awful. However, in the XCode4 beta this has been greatly improved. You just click on a couple buttons within XCode itself, and everything gets automagically set up. I've heard that it still causes problems i

You cannot find a nice, inexpensive apartment in Astoria or Williamsburg for much less than $1900 anymore. Williamsburg is way overpriced now. Better luck in Astoria but honestly you have to go pretty deep into Queens or Brooklyn for any co

You can just look at the bedbug registry. No landlord is going to let you run your own bedbug inspection. As gross as the bedbug situation is in Williamsburg, I still think there's a worse roach problem. There's just as big of a bedbug prob

I guess it depends on what you are farming. Where I grew up the farmers grew commodity crops like wheat and soybeans and did mostly take the winter off. Sometimes they'd have a 2nd job as a pee-wee hockey coach or something like that.

Google went crazy with hiring in 2006 and relaxed its standards, letting in a bunch of duds. There's a higher chance at Google that your manager is going to be a creep and your coworkers are going to be mouth breathers. Facebook is younger

Surfing in the Bay Area is hard for a number of reasons: you need a car and a surfboard, the water is freezing cold (you need a thick wetsuit), Silicon Valley is inland and blocked off from the ocean by a mountain range, and the good waves

This happened to my dad. TIA was suspected but there was no lasting damage nor other stroke symptoms. It was ruled exhaustion. My dad regularly works 70-80 hour weeks and does at least one all-nighter a month. What I learned is that this is

In SV/SF, these jobs pay $150-$200K for very nebulous work, a lot of exposure to how VC works, and connections to loads of startups. I'm not sure about the SLC scene, but such a job is a no-brainer in California, especially if you are kind
