That’s exactly the whole point of this work: that too much effort is spent developing new widgets instead of figuring out why governance or society is not delivering peoples needs and what to do about it. This needs interdisciplinary appro

Well the title is scientific computing, which includes HPC but not only. Anyway the fact is that a lot of "HPC" in university clusters is smaller jobs that are too much for an average PC to handle, but still fit into a single typi

I've been running a group server (basically a shared workstation) for 5 years and it's been great. Way cheaper than cloud, no worrying about national rules on where data can be stored, no waiting in a SLURM batch queue, Jupyter no

There's a lot of jokes about 'old' languages but when you see the amount of churn with the new ones cough javascript cough then you appreciate how it's nice have something written once and for all. Plenty of FORTRAN

A bit absurd to roll out all these fertility stats but never even mention social issues behind these trends, like a patriarchal culture, excessive over work, poor conditions for retirees…

I think a lot of people assume that they won't like a custom language (I did too) but the reality is when you start using GDScript it just isn't such an issue. One of the huge advantages of GDScript is how deeply in integrates wit

Adam should write a book “how to fail upwards in silicon valley” What is infuriating is that there is so much great work done by great people on building strong resilient and affordable towns which are a pleasure to live and work in, but th

If managed mysql is enough for you then probably no need to change. If you have more significant compute needs a dedicated server can start to make sense. Linux admin is becoming a bit of a lost art in this container-everything world but ac

Always glad to see funds go to a great and well managed Open source project like Blender! That said, looking up what the hell is 'Decentraland' and how it works is to dive into a dystopian nightmare. Cutesy illustrations tell you

It really does have to do with the number of maintainers. A huge part of the work is not just building a package manager, but coordinating many stakeholders to all use it. That would also mean building a package manager that covers all of t

Worth noting that the PSF has no authority to tell people how to do their packaging. Rust's Cargo is 20 years newer than Python and benefits from those decades of experience. It's a very different proposition to start a new system
