Will the canvas mouse input lag also go down? I tried to program some small games once and noticed this was horrible on all my (Windows 7) desktop browsers. Just tried again using this demo [1] (not mine!), and now on Chrome it was OK. Edit

On iOS 10, it does not disable animations but replaces them with fade-ins/fade-outs. I don't know the behaviour on iOS 11, but I suspect it is going to be the same.

Each email went out to 12,000 people. 125 opened the unstyled mail, 37 opened the styled mail. That result seems pretty significant to me.

You have to take births and deaths into account, which is not straightforward. Assuming fast interstellar travel, "loss of simultaneity" causes the number of people in space to depend on your reference frame (your speed and locati

I hope some day this will generalize to video. I don't care about the exact shape of background trees in an action movie - with this approach, they could be compressed to just a few bytes, regardless of resolution.

While I mostly agree with the article's risk assessments, it unfortunately leaves out one major risk factor: Nuclear proliferation. If more and more countries have access to nuclear power plants, then they also have the possibility to

Oh wow, even microparsec/kilofortnight in m/s works now. This did not work for many years, and prompted me to write my only ever e-mail to Google with a complaint about 5 years ago. Unfortunaetly, the conversion 30 miles per gallo

I absolutely agree with these requests! I am so desperate for an uncertainty-aware/unit-aware calculator that I tried implementing one myself, even though it is quite beyond my skill-set. I gave up and used Mathematica (more on that be

You are forgetting the "Visa Waiver Program". Essentially, the rest of us Europeans are required to fill out detailed forms, pay a fee for filling out those forms, and then get a government-issued authorization for "visa free

A few years ago, I was struggling to find the weak, electronic signal of an ion in a single-particle ion trap. I was certain the ion was still in the trap, but I probably had the trapping voltage wrong and the ion was not in resonance with

We value “T-shaped” people. That is, people who are both generalists (highly skilled at a broad set of valuable things—the top of the T) and also experts (among the best in their field within a narrow discipline -- the vertical leg of the

An interesting read! Unfortunately the author omits the mindblowing (at least for me) proof of why the series Z(s) = 1 + 1/(2^s) + 1/(3^s) + 1/(4^s) + ... is equal to the infinite product over the terms "1/(1-p^(-

If you compare "being killed by the police" to other causes of death, then yes, you can call it rare. However, 600 killings in just over half a year is deeply troubling when you compare it to other first-world nations. For example

Disable all Javascript? No, that does not work. That's why extensions like NoScript exist, so that you can whitelist safe domains. This is actually quite usable, but on about 3% of websites, it doesn't work. These site are usually

You are right, I forgot about Gnome and KDE. I tend to use classic shells on Linux, and the graphical shell on Windows, so I made a wrong generalization. It's probably more accurate to say that "undo" of simple operations (rm

My number-one wish for a NGS: Undo! Take, for example, rm. The hoops we have to jump through when accidentally rm'ing a file are ridiculous [1]. But in most cases (smallish, non-secret files), rm should be trivially undoable. Windows g

Do these new technologies enable lower mouse-event latencies? I struggle with making even the simplest 2d apps in a canvas element, because they always end up feeling sluggish. This was and still is a major point where Flash beats HTML5.

I love their introduction to sound synthesis. I never managed to turn simple waveforms into warm sounds, and their example of combinging a saw-tooth with a 2Hz-offset sine, then a low-pass filter and an attack/decay amplitude modulator
