Technology (Generation III+) is already shared with France, India, Finland, UK, Japan, China. Generation III+ are likely the most efficient/safe nuclear reactors at the moment. Ideally we would start to build hundred of them, so we c

Blowing up nukes in middle of the Pacific ocean, has nothing to do with nuclear power generation. There is clearly a communication and educational issue around nuclear power.

Energy infrastructure time horizons are different from politicians ones. Energy policy requires planning and large investments over decades. There is no incentives for politicians today to say here we are spending $XXB on energy infrastruc

Extracting heat from 10 miles underground, means cooling it. What would the impact of cooling it ? I guess nothing is truly free, even harnessing solar energy comes with a price. I do not know the numbers, they might be negligible. But cu

I would disagree, in this case, we have a combination of 2 issues: 1. Climate change due to CO2/etc. emissions 2. Fossil fuel (oil/gas/coal) peak Even if we do not care about climate change, as fossil fuel addicts, any declin

Not sure if the current fleet talk much. With ubiquitous connectivity, maybe we could have all those vehicles talking to each other to act collectively.

I was just bring a data point about dismantling. Most reactors would be extended, in US we agreed to extend to 60 years, and already some are asking to push to 80 years. Since we update and replace lots of things every over time, we end up

The cost to dismantle a nuclear power plant is the same as for coal/gaz power plants. ~10% of the initial price. https://world-nuclear.org/information-library/nuclear-fuel-c...

Despite the large upfront cost, nuclear still provides cheap electricity. Currently, the price of the electricity generated by nuclear is more impacted by the way the upfront cost was financed than by the price of the combustible (uranium)

Explain to people around you. Eventually this has to percolate to the government. It is a question a national security, for every country. If a country wants to secure its GDP, then it needs cheap energy. Oil has been the primary cheap e

Because all the cost must be paid upfront, and takes 10+ years before the first GWh gets out. So, it does not fit well with private investors. The cost of the electricity exiting a nuclear reactor is directly related to the cost of money (

This is hypothetical, as it cannot happen. Building nuclear reactors to replace 100% of energy production would take ages on its own. And if the plan is to build lots of nuclear reactors, it would better to build breeders and not old LWR.

Good questions. Just the first question is a rabbit hole on its own. How much nuclear fuel (lets focus on uranium) is left on Earth ? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peak_uranium Looks like there is uranium everywhere

Nuclear waste storage is solved. And for the last generation (4th) of nuclear power plants, the waste gets back to natural level of radioactivity in only 1,000 years. We have in France bridges that are older than that. Running a nuclear p

You need less ressource (metal) per GWh with a nuclear power plant than with solar or wind. The Uranium waste for a French person is about 10gr/year (France is 70% nuclear when it comes to electricity).

Once the uranium cartridge is depleted after several years, that becomes waste. There are mostly 2 ways to deals with it: 1. Like US or Sweden, you take it as-is and bury it. 2. Like France and Japan, you recycle it to make more cartridges

I am also interested by this question. Energy => machine/labor => GDP So, my first naive take would be that we could extract/build/ship more for less, and then potentially keeps the "growing" economy humming.

That was kinda the beauty of the minitel. You did not have to provide anything. The traffic coming from your telephone line was charged to your telephone bill. That created some household drama... Who spent 200 francs on porn last month ?
