Every time I try to skip the glue code, it bites me. You need the glue layer to allow for indirection, tight coupling through codegen or reflection will work early on but eventually a dependency will need to be shimmed, proxied or otherwise

In part, I don’t think this is people naively pursuing the moon shot. Rather the incentives and pressures are there to go for the cultural shift. Your investors are pushing you to do it, you can have a lifestyle business that makes you a co

Temporal is a pretty complicated system. It has sharding built in, stores the entire activity history and runs multiple queues for timers and events. I’m a big fan (worked at Uber) but it’s definitely not just postgres with a few indices.

The nuance is a) what happens to existing equity stakeholders and b) does the bailout have to be repaid. If the answer is nothing and no, then it’s a bailout philosophically. If the existing investors get diluted then they’re in part paying

The same is true for operations, if your business scales using humans you should avoid complicated tooling until you have product market fit. An old CEO curbed my enthusiasm by telling me “businesses are built on excel” and he was right.

It’s quite similar mechanically to this blog post about Uber’s policy framework: https://www.uber.com/blog/attribute-based-access-control-at-... . We have an additional scaling dimension though, as our permission model

I’ve watched y’all’s Papers We Love talk about Zanzibar and have recommended authzed to organizations bootstrapping permission modeling. It’s been awhile, is the gist that Spanner’s coordinated clocks allow tighter consensus (i.e. faster wr

My intuition is that offering this as a service you’re targeting business logic that can handle 25ms authz. We’re on the core path in a latency sensitive industry, and end up running many permissions checks at various layers for a single ap

I suspect most business logic can handle 25ms for authz and that’s the right trade off. I think Google’s Zanzibar is also centralized but leverages extreme caching to get lower latencies? I work on an IAM system that is sub-ms p99 for our a

It’s not. We have functioning institutions that generally perform well over long periods of time. People respect the rule of law and there is an expectation of justice. Spend time in Honduras or Brazil to see what low trust looks like.

Society isn’t a system we can reason about in absolutes. The spirit of the law says that you can’t tell “fire!” in a crowded building, I think we collectively agree that there are limitations on free speech and we’re fortunate to let the co
