If there's one country where nuclear does not make any sense, it's Australia: abundant sun, large areas of desert, sparse population, not enough water. Sun + wind + batteries is an even better proposition for Australia than in Cal

> However, with solar and wind now far cheaper than nuclear due to no need for massive capital investments in concrete and steel upfront many years before production starts, does it even make sense for governments to go down this route?

Two things happen at the same time: 1. people say that robots are taking all the jobs 2. countries raise retirement age & adopt 6 day work week, because there's too much work to be done I am not entirely sure, but maybe robots are

In SF Bay Area, the cost of electricity is $0.42/kWh, so around $20/year for just extra idle usage. Still not a lot, but it adds up.

I don't live in Morro Bar, so I don't have a horse in this race; I support battery deployments in California, but I also think it's stupid to place a battery in the place, where people actually want to live. California is lar

California is a bad example for nuclear, as it's the perfect spot for solar. On the opposite, Finland lacks sun, but enjoys their new reactor (even though, since it's another one-off project, it's over budget).
