So you seem to want to: - socialize with other engineers, - work (= program, I suppose) on interesting projects together. My opinion is that programming is actually a very lonely activity to the point where I think it is actually harmful if

It seems that the contents are copy/pasted from a bunch of different messages. Here is the list of messages from that day: https://lkml.org/lkml/2000/8/22 . Torvalds's responses are in there as well

My personal favourite combination as well! Don't care about if its old-fashioned or what other people think about Perl and C. To me, a programmer should start learning C then work his/her way up!

You could write a small program that, everytime some calculation is done with money, cuts of the remaining fractions of cents and puts them into your bank account. Over time it will be a lot of money and no one will notice ;)

While I do not particularly often take part in meetings, I know of some colleagues who often go and have programming to do. I really can see the stress in their eyes, when the meetings for the day are over shortly after lunch time and they

Great topic and from scanning the table of contents the guidelines are well chosen. The matter maintainability is discussed far too seldom! I would like to add that "maintainability" more often than not refers to maintenance "
