There was a thread about slow web: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9791606 I prefer a static site without JavaScript any time of day! (over a JS bloated webs(h)ite)

If I had $100,000 I would select a software idea that really solves a problem and develop it open source. I would be the only developer so would probably need $2000 per month. So I would be able to program roughly 4 years with the money. Of

I suggest reading "How to Solve It: A New Aspect of Mathematical Method" by G. Polya und John H. Conway. Note: it's not about mathematics but about general problem solving.

I understand you want to be in "control" of how exactly a query is beeing executed (what indices it uses). There is a lot to be said about query optimization but it is not "random". My guess is that most queries can be o

I recognize this effect with a lot of websites, namely google maps, most fancy/designed web 2.0 startup websites (those that like to display a lot layers using CSS that change their position when scrolling... don't know how this i

I think there is a tendency to focus on finding an algorithm that determines weither and how many discussions are "the top x". But really this is not the point of discussions. The point is to maximize usefulness for the participan

I found this too. This is probably due to the fact that Hacker News is (mainly) for sharing news not discussing topics. The discussion part is not supported well by the mechanics of the site.

I think it boils down to this: Hacker News is a "news" site and what I am looking for is a discussion forum where people discuss software development topics.

I am not explicitly looking for people but for posts about the mentioned topics with the mentioned focus. So both topics fit.

To clarify: - I am looking for a discussion forum, not an aggregator. - By "web-focused" I meant posts about website development technology used on client and/or server side. Some of this technology is still interesting, like

My impression may very well be wrong. Maybe the (education of the) people behind are even less relevant. The community I am looking for should focus on professional software development. The occasional "look at this new framework"

I guess what I meant by "professional" was more people with a formal education in computer science and some years of practical experience. It is just my impression that this is not so much the case here at HN. This being said, I d

They try to justify their next startup by claiming to have identified the reasons why their previous startup failed. (irony) Actually if they learnt something, they did not fail. Their startup just ceased to exist.

I think you do not have enough intrinsic motivation [1] to start what you crave to do (yet). Seek out for some idea/project that creates this inner motivation and then it will be easy to start. Edit: You wanted a plan of action: try as

The criteria for software quality that this is mainly about are reliability and efficiency ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_quality#Measurement ). I think these are important for all software domains.

In order to find solutions for your problem (redefining the role of the database) you should look at how to analyze your software processes (data flow, dependencies, coupling). Being a good architect, in my opinion, is all about analyzing &

That it is not a problem of "how fast the browser renders stuff" can be easily demonstrated by this small experiment: just create a website that contains an infinite JS loop (maybe through the use of window.setTimeout() instead of
