I wonder why Apple's different. From what I read, their average salaries are much lower but their loyalty is much higher. Besides, you don't hear of too many Apple employees quickly leaving for other places, at least not as much as Facebo

What Palm really needs (and what I really wish it had) is a non-phone device carrying WebOS It's unbelievable how important and how big the iPod Touch (it's 40% of all iOS devices) is for the iOS platform.

To be fair, we have now done exactly that. If we have food on us, we'd give it. Not saying I don't care or rationalizing that it's not my problem. I'm just saying that the way I explain this could be used by many others to explain it as wel

What really killed me was seeing the homeless buy or sell drugs/booze. I went from a really wealthy suburb to a college campus that was more representative of "the real world" and encountered the homeless on the edge of campus for the first

You really won't find that culture anywhere but here, really. Even Europe doesn't fully have that yet. Finding success while working in Egypt is really not impossible. It lends to just working differently. You probably can't grow a consumer

Such an interesting discussion for me. I'm Hany, an Egyptian American, currently living in the states and involved with technology. The one thing that I absolutely will say is better in the United States than other places is funding. The id

I think whatever you saw is probably due to the fact that this was a very quick interview done outside in an impromptu way. PG's body language could have meant a million other things. Scoble's one of the greatest advocates of startups and n

Great article and well-thought out argument! But when I see this I think: why the hell would I want to retire at 30 when I can just start another company?

Thanks for the good discussion as well. It's refreshing to have a civil thoughtful engaging conversation about such topics, for a change. Thank you Hacker News and thank you lionhearted as well. Two quick things. When I say "heinous" practi

I think his point was that Western progressives don't even get along with all of the population of the West, let alone "traditional Muslims". In this country, we're divided along such an issue and we have HUGE areas/pockets that no one coul

I wasn't asking rhetorically and I am, in fact, a proud Muslim myself. I appreciate that you used the word 'culture' before your argument but it's still wrong to use the word 'Islam' before 'culture'. It's just culture. Not Islamic culture.

I didn't know this and it was very interesting. But, honestly, not all that surprising. The beauty of this country is that it's a melting pot of cultures, religions, ideas, colors, and ethnic classes. It's what makes us both different and g

The design for this website is one the things that consistently gets me. It's so simple and gorgeous. Dustin Curtis, in a tweet, also agrees: "This is absolutely awesome: http://ohlife.com Very well designed and very simple."

Two things. 1. Don't worry about the idea. They tend to change a lot. Pick something that interests you, roll along with it, and if you don't like just move on to a different idea. 2. I'm a college student too. One thing that hasn't been me

I really like this question. As a technical guy, I struggled a lot to come up with an adequate answer as a business-minded friend and I were discussing this. We almost became co-founders. I'll be interested in what others' experiences entai

There are a ton of books on the subject, most are fine. Regarding graphic design, I would check out something like Pixel2Life ( http://www.pixel2life.com ) as it provides a lot of tutorials and step-by-step exercises. Regarding the bigger i

I'd say that compared to Oracle's evilness, Google seems quite innocent and tame. Certainly the most evil company in this whole debacle is Oracle, not Google.

Reading this text with this stylesheet is so painful. My my, look how far we've come with CSS. Even something as simply as some line-height and a "double-spacing" effect would be so welcome here.

Same with my school. The only way something like this could have happened is if the valedictorian writes one speech for the principal to screen but delivers a totally different speech for the actual event.
