AstriCon was last week in Atlanta, and had 300+ attendees. Fred Posner wrote about it in https://www.fredposner.com/2243/astricon-2019-thoughts/

In continental Europe there is no tipping. Yes, if you leave a tip they sure won't mind (and they maybe kind of expect it from tourists in tourist traps), but there is no obligation.

Citizenship is relatively hard: you have to be a resident for 12+ years to start the process. A lot of people never bother - a long term residency permit ("C") is almost as good, but you don't vote and do not have military d

We use it extensively as a kind of "incremental typing" - that is, I can assert that what goes in to a function has a given shape and what goes out complies as well. Even in production, the overhead is quite low (think 5% in our u

Not sure I'm the only one, but I'm at a conference with my 2019 MBP and when I see someone with an old MBP I think "that must be a new model.... I definitely could use all those ports and that nice keyboard". Then I reme

Hibernate promises that you use the database "as if" it was not there. You can drop into SQL whenever you need, but you cannot remove all the stuff you had to add just to make it work (saving, reloading, handling caching....). So

YMMV, but for me it feels like magic every time I use it. I can get things done in declarative way that would take a while in any programming language I know (and I'm a Clojure guy, so I value simplicity and conciseness).

Just install the ISO, connect two phones (or softphones) and play around with it a bit. It's a lot of fun, and it's useful IRL. For example, inbound queues (+QueueMetrics for monitoring) are very useful to share work on the basis

We run stuff in a datacenter in Cape Town, and the quality of the connection to our C&C systems in Switzerland is sometimes awful bad - very slow, or routing issues where you have total black holes for minutes. We run similar workloads

It would be a major achievement to make it less reliable. I have had computers for ~40 years now, and none had a keyboard as bad as the one I'm using now (MBP13, 2018).

Spectrum would be great, but I think it's still way off from being usable. Taking a line from Specter's page, static analysis that catches idiotic bugs (es mis-typed keys) would really be "Clojure's missing piece"

You could simply play a message of your voice that says "My number is 555-123-4444 please get me immediately off your list - press 7 to confirm". They will hang up and the dialer will call again. And again.

Sometimes they leave a message on the voicemail, and in this case you do have a number to be called back. I wonder if it would be legal for you to recall them using a robodialer. Say you implement something like this: https://ww

I wonder if one should not use a dialer to call them back, sending an automated message until someone listens and acknowledges? They have a huge outbound capability, but their weak spot is inbound and call completion - they expect basicall
