There's really no question. Cost of bike maintenance vs car maintenance. Societal cost of road wear due to a huge car vs a tiny bike. Burden on healthcare system, regulation and enforcement for dangerous driving habits. We all pay so m

I much prefer pies that are baked with a very tart apple, which mellows out and gives lots of complex flavour when cooked. Back home we had "cooking apples" especially meant for this which were basically inedible when raw. Now I&#

These outcomes are pretty extreme and therefore I think pretty unlikely. I think it's useful to consider but maybe harmful to expect them and prepare only for such events. One thing I also think is very important, maybe most important

I have a very similar outlook. It's pretty clear to me that things are moving faster and faster in society and likely not towards anything very good. So it seems naive to expect the old models to continue working. My "retirement p

You have to include more than just oil refining too: - there's the CO2 emitted during manufacture of the vehicle and maintaining the vehicle - the CO2 emitted to construct and maintain the roads the vehicle is used on (apparently this

Yes, we should be demanding alternatives to all petrochemicals. It seems that we take for granted that plastics are just a fact of life now but this is a big reason -- along with other more popular ones like microplastic pollution, ocean wi

Resources are not homogeneously distributed either though. Coltan for your smartphone has to be mined by children in the Congo before being shipped to fabs in China, etc. Most supply chains are just so global and complex. Reorganising to ha

I think about things like this: https://preview.redd.it/clcfr7xw08y31.jpg?auto=webp&s=6dc026... It was around that time when modern society became remarkably efficient at poisoning or completely destroying ecosystems

I live in NYC, "greatest city in the world," and I encounter rats almost daily. Almost every apartment here will have a cockroach problem at some point. And since most of the city is a food desert, it takes pretty serious determin

There's no way that Apple could enforce this or even confidently guarantee that they have a carbon-free product, global supply chains are just too complicated. Can they even guarantee that there is no slave labour at any point in the p

I'm building for myself without concrete, stick-frame or drywall. I decided to go more traditional with stone and timber frame joinery. It's an approach that takes a lot more attention in the labour and is hard to mass produce but
