Bees don’t need prompting to build regular hexagons, they do that on their own. Pre-drawn frames are useful for getting them to build flat combs, that can be removed and replaced in the hive without damage.

What? I’ve kept bees for years, and this is ridiculous. If you want to make a diy hive that mimics bees natural nests, check out top bar hives. Don’t build them using pallets, which are often treated with insecticides to avoid spreading pes

Seems like it would depend on role distribution. If all the senior leadership work from an office together and everyone else is remote, I'd call that office the headquarters regardless of employee percentage.

They would be foolish to publicly criticize their employer. Just because someone doesn’t post criticism publicly doesn’t mean they aren’t pushing internally. In the end though, the best way to hurt them is to walk away.

The reason this is a story is that it's calling out the bullshit reasoning of management, not that management doesn't have a right to decide the content of their media properties. Many of us have sat through meetings with leadersh

"I was just doing my job" is not an excuse. It is absolutely not only our right to decide how our work is used in the world, but our duty to make sure we're not enabling human rights violations. I applaud and support tech wor

Plants do most of their water absorption through their roots, not their leaves. They're also prone to fungal problems when their leaves stay damp. There's no reason to water the leaves rather than the dirt around the roots, unless

Unfortunately (?) there is no reasonable expectation of privacy for activities visible from public areas. That reasoning is used for everything from license plate scanners to upskirt videos.

The coho are federally listed and protected in my watershed, so we’re not competing with fishermen. That program was run in conjunction with local scientists trying to support and study the coho run in the area. The steelhead part of the ha

Wow, I’d never heard of the new Madrid fault, but FEMA said a recurrence if that earthquake series would cause thousands of fatalities! In California we’re aware of earthquakes since they happen with some regularity. Places like Oregon and

Customer acquisition is expensive, and if you have a subscription-based model you only have to get a customer once. If you're relying on one-off payments, every transaction comes with acquisition costs.

Yup! The phone booths don't have adequate ventilation, so fumes build up inside of them. It's very surprising that the phone booth manufacturers didn't consider this.

Game of Thrones is not a historical source, it’s a work of fiction created with modern biases. You say you look to evolutionary biology, but it’s far more common for females to form family groups that kick the males out once they’re of age.

Redwoods do not require forest fires for reproduction, and no native species require large forest fires. There are plenty of native plants that need fire to reproduce, but they do better with smaller fires that produce heat to open seeds

I’m a motorcyclist, and I don’t get how this works for you in real life. If I’m riding down the road and there’s a car stopped at a stop sign or intersection, and we make eye contact, yes I assume they see me. I do not come to a full stop i

Both NASA and the soviets sent animals into space that they knew weren’t coming back alive. Read up on Laika the dog if you’d like an example. I agree that it’s cruel but it’s no more cruel than things we’ve already done.

This is a legitimate cold processed soap recipe, just like you’d buy at a fancy store or farmers market. Unfortunately most “soap” you buy in stores is actually a detergent bar, which is much stronger.

Oof, nowadays recipes call for adding the lye to the fat, rather than the fat to the lye. The lye will react with the fat to produce heat, and it’s much better to ramp up the ratio of lye to fat rather than introducing a small amount of fat
