Prometheus cofounder here - we're happy to take any questions. Huge congrats to everyone who made this release possible and for all the excellent work over the years that lead up to this!

A couple of us from Prometheus met with Josef from Chronix last week. I haven't tried Chronix yet, but it sounds great for what they're doing. It's currently used for industrial manufacturing monitoring (think car production

That's great, but with processes (containerized or not), I can use the full variety of standard diagnostic tools built over many decades. Of course you can start building similar tools for unikernels, but it's gonna take you a lo

Yep, I did. It still doesn't really change my view, especially on the front of operatability/debuggability. If you have ever operated really large services, you know how big of a problem the lack of that is.

It seems this article gleefully admits many of the downsides of unikernels mentioned in https://www.joyent.com/blog/unikernels-are-unfit-for-product... , while being very brief and naive about the upsides (mainly the ve

In the end, you just need to be able to find enough people who want to go (there are plenty) and who have the money to pay for the trip (Elon hopes to bring down the cost to such a level that someone selling their home on Earth could afford

I'm no expert at all, but three things come to mind: - Mars has a (thin) atmosphere, mostly made up of CO2 -> good for plant growth. The Moon has none. - Mars has gravity closer to Earth than the Moon. - Mars has lots of water, whil

I don't feel confused about this and still think the article makes it sound like they are missing a publicly promised date (which may still happen in the future, but at the moment and regarding the July 1 date, that's just wrong),

What Elon said made perfect sense to me. They have an internal date of July 1 for both external and internal suppliers to meet. But statistically, given there are thousands of parts, they know it's very unlikely that even with the high

Having listened to the earnings call, this article makes me facepalm. When explaining the internal July 1 target date, Elon repeatedly said he would explain it at the risk of it being misinterpreted by the media, and then this article misin

You're right. We've neglected that whole section for too long and it's a bit out of date. I don't have enough knowledge about the current state of InfluxDB though (besides clustering becoming a closed-source feature and

That's why websites that don't give a price quote for their products without contacting a sales rep now get frequently mocked with the words: "If SpaceX can do it, you can do it.".

While aware of unsupervised learning, I thought I had read somewhere that it wasn't yet a solved problem to use it for this kind of learning. But that might be wrong, and the Wikipedia article mentions some interesting examples.

Question from a machine learning noob: how would they use an unlabeled dataset for training? Would Google employees listen to it all (if the ToS would even allow that) and transscribe it, then use the result for training? Or is there anothe

Thanks! We only use LevelDB for Prometheus's time series indexes, while using a custom-built storage engine for the actual series data. But Prometheus's local storage has always been built as single-node storage without clustering

I don't think anyone is saying anything about it being evil, and it may even make sense for InfluxData the company. But for users, not having clustering (for scalability, long-term storage, and durability) will limit the value of the o

True, but a fork is a fork is a fork. It would have to be done very competently (clustering is hard) and maintained long-term, by people who are not even part of InfluxData and thus have a big starting disadvantage in experience and user ba

This makes me think: an open-source project can be better off if it's not controlled by any one company. While in Prometheus ( http://prometheus.io ), we might still take a while before we have a clustered remote long-term

Yes, Prometheus is fundamentally a store for numeric time series (with a set of dimensions attached), not a store for individual events or log entries.

Though I'm a Prometheus author, I need to defend InfluxDB here :) Since 0.9.0, they support tags (vs. fields), which store indexed dimensions similarly to how Prometheus does it. So this argument doesn't count anymore. Still, ther
